Instructions & Guidelines

The Dame Joan Sutherland Fund offers small grants from $500 up to $5,000 for emerging Australian or American artists to assist in their professional development. Before you submit an application, please ensure you read all the instructions and eligibility requirements.
The standard of our applicants is very high and we are not able to fund all applicants. Please note that you may not apply for the same course or project more than once.

For the purpose of these guidelines, all applicants will be referred to as ‘the artist’.

Applying for a grant

All applicants are required to complete the online Application Form. You will be required to set up a site account. Within your account you can save, leave and go back to your application anytime before submitting by the due date. Please be aware you will be required to upload supporting documents to this online form, as listed below.

You will be notified of the results of your application by email approximately 8 weeks after the deadline, at which time successful applicants will receive further instruction.

Grants from the Fund are reviewed on a three-round basis by the Association's staff in consultation with the Cultural Committee.

Applications are due at midnight Eastern Standard time (New York time). Please note that the Application Form will only be available from the Application Open date for each round. Applicants are notified of the outcome of their application approximately 8 weeks after the submission deadline.

Required supporting documents

All applicants are required to include the following supporting materials to their application:

1. Artist Statement: please outline your purpose for applying to the Dame Joan Sutherland Fund (no more than 500 words).
2. Artist resume of no more than 1 x A4 or U.S. Letter sized page in length.

3. budget outlining costs for the proposal, detailing other funding sources. Please provide confirmation letters of any confirmed pledges from other funding sources. 

4. letter of confirmation from educational organization or nominated host body/ mentor (where a formal program of study, internship or mentorship is being undertaken);

5. Proof of citizenship/residency status (scanned photo page of your passport)

 Two professional references (link to submit confidential references on the application form).
Additional supporting materials for Visual Artists:
· Visual artists/designers must submit 8 images of their work (maximum 2MB each image) or a video (maximum 50 MB) and/or a moving image as an MP4 file (maximum 50MB). A live link to your video(s) will also be accepted. Include an accompanying image list including your name, artwork title, year, media and dimensions of each work.
· Art writers must submit a sample of an essay or article (minimum 500 words).
· Applications for assistance to exhibit at a notable public gallery space - A written agreement from the exhibiting venue must accompany the application in order for the request for funding to be considered.
