St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney Clinical Exchange

The American Australian Association has partnered with St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney to establish a new Clinical Exchange Program supporting Australian and American graduate level doctors, nurses and researchers to participate in immersive clinical experiences, working alongside renowned experts in their host country.

This transformative clinical exchange program will support future leaders in health and medicine to learn from each other and foster an environment of innovation and collaboration, driving forward the frontiers of medical science.

The American Australian Association – St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney Clinical Exchange Program provides support of US$40,000 to St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney clinicians to undertake study or innovative translational research at an accredited healthcare organisation in the United States (Australia to USA direction) and support of US$40,000 to American clinicians to undertake study or innovative translational research at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney (USA to Australia direction)

Three exchanges will be offered initially in the fields of movement disorders, pain management and nursing in cellular therapies and stem cell transplant.

There are two scholarship application rounds offered each year, one in each direction:

Australia to USA: Open for application on January 1 to March 31.
USA to Australia: Open for application on August 1 to September 30.

Movement Disorders is a rapidly evolving discipline with immense potential for improving patient care outcomes. By bringing together professionals from the US and Australia, the clinical exchange program will foster an environment of innovation and collaboration, driving forward the frontiers of medical science.

Supported by the JW&M Cunningham Foundation this scholarship will fund one Australian and one American graduate level clinician researcher to undertake research in the field of Movement Disorders. Applicants with the following specialisations, but not limited to, are invited to apply: MRI guided focused ultrasound, neuromodulation, Fragile X, Parkinson’s Disease, Essential Tremor.

The duration of the exchange is to be no less than three months and must begin within a year from the application closing date. Funds of US$40,000 will be provided to each scholar to support travel costs, living expenses, visas, insurance and any other costs associated with living abroad.

Australian Applicants: Participant placement will be carried out an accredited US healthcare or medical research institution.
American Applicants: Participant placement will be carried out at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney under the supervision of Dr Stephen Tisch [link to research and bio].

    • Are an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • USA to Australia Applicants:
    • Plan to undertake their exchange placement at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney
    • Are a US citizen or permanent resident
  • Applicant is committed to pursuing their area of study as a long-term career, and the applicant’s references indicate strong professional promise.
  • Applicant is committed to completing a report within two months after return to their home country outlining the benefits, results and impact of the exchange, including academic publications, new or strengthened institutional partnerships, individual career progression, contribution to the Hospital and Australia’s goal of driving growth intranslational research and clinical sectors. About:

St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney’s Pain Medicine department offers assessment, management services and programs for patients experiencing persisting pain. This includes post trauma, surgeryand pain arising from chronic medical conditions. The Hospital’s services include consultation for inpatients and an outpatient chronic pain clinic for people living in the community. For ruraland regional patients, a telehealth service is also offered as well as delivering rural education weekends and pain clinics as part of the Hospital’s outreach service.

St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney developed Australia’s first online multidisciplinary pain management program offering participants pain education and strategies from physiotherapy, psychology and other forms of treatment, and is now a sought-after program globally.

Supported a bequest from the late Valerie McKenzie this scholarship will fund one Australian and one American graduate level clinician researcher to undertake research in the field of PainManagement and Rehabilitation Medicine.

About:

Cellular therapy is an emerging and exciting field of medicine with many research trials taking place around the world. St Vincent’s Hospital has prioritised research into cellular therapy exclusively for haematological cancers and autoimmune diseases.

Supported by the Delta Goodrem Foundation this scholarship will fund one Australian and one American mid-career nurse to undertake research in the specialised are of Cellular Therapy and Stem Cell Transplant nursing and patient care. Nursing in cellular therapy and stem cell transplant involves the specialised care and management of patients undergoing procedures related to stem cell transplantation, immunotherapy, and other cellular therapies.

The duration of the exchange is to be no less than three months and must begin within a year from the application closing date.
Funds of US$40,000 will be provided to each scholar to support travel costs, living expenses, visas, insurance and any other costs associated with living abroad.

Australian Applicants: Participant placement will be carried out an accredited US healthcare or medical research institution.
American Applicants: Participant placement will be carried out at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney.
