General

What is the Australia to USA Scholarship Program?

  • The Association awards Scholarships at the Postgraduate (Masters, PhD or post-doctoral) level of up to US$40,000 each year. Scholarships are available to Australians who will benefit from doing advanced research or study in the fields of science, technology, medicine, engineering or sustainable development in the United States.  Scholars are expected to be Ambassadors for their country and intend to contribute to Australian intellectual capital, as well as the country’s overall social and economic well-being upon their return.

What is the USA to Australia Scholarship Program?

  • The Association awards Scholarships at the Graduate (Masters, PhD or post-doctoral) level of up to US$40,000 each year. Does the Association help arrange university or institutional affiliations in the US or Australia?

  • No. Applicants must make their own arrangements for university affiliation and have a confirmed placement by the time the Scholarship is awarded.

Eligibility

Who is eligible for the Australia to the US Scholarship program?

  • Applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident; undertaking or intending to undertake research or study at a graduate level – Masters, PhD or post-doctoral in the United States. Applicants may already be in the U.S. and enrolled in a program at the time of application.

Who is eligible for the US to Australia Scholarship program?

  • Applicants must be an American citizen or permanent resident; undertaking or intending to undertake research or study at a graduate level - Masters, PhD or post-doctoral in Australia. Applicants may already be in Australia and enrolled in a program at the time of application.

My course of study will not include a formal research component. Am I eligible?

  • Study without a defined purpose is less compelling for a scholarship award. Applicants must explain why being in the Australia or the US is important to the development of their research / study and how this study/research will benefit the broader American-Australian relationship.

Are sabbaticals supported by the Association's awards?

  • No.  The American Australian Association does not support sabbaticals.

Are their minimum/ maximum time restrictions on the duration of research / study undertaken?

  • Yes. Scholarships are awarded for a minimum of one-year of full time study.

When do I have to begin the Scholarship?

  • Selected scholars must commence their research / study outlined in their original application within two-years of receiving the Scholarship Notification Letter of Offer from the American Australian Association.  Scholarship funds must also be used within this same window of time, or be forfeited.

I am an Australian citizen studying/ living in the US, am I still eligible to apply for the A to U Scholarships?

  • Yes.  You may have already have commenced your research / study in the US, for which you are seeking funding.

I am an American citizen studying/ living in Australia, am I still eligible to apply for the U to A Scholarships?

  • Yes.  You may have already have commenced your research / study in the Australia, for which you are seeking funding.



Budget & Finances

What items can be included in the budget?

  • The Scholarship is intended to support a scholars' travel, living and tuition expenses.

Can I accept other grants or awards in addition to the American Australian Association Scholarship?

  • Yes. You may accept additional grants to satisfy your budget needs as described in the application form. However, you must detail in your application the type of grant(s) and amount(s) you have applied for, or received. The Association reserves the right to decline an application if the corresponding budget cannot be justified.

Am I responsible for any taxes incurred as a result of being selected as a Scholar?

  • Yes. Scholars are responsible for payment of any and all taxes incurred. We strongly advise you to seek your own independent taxation counsel.

Can the Scholarship be used to pay for family/dependent travel?

  • No.  The Scholarship is solely to assist the applicant, and cannot be used to support dependents.

If awarded, when must I begin my scholarship?

  • Scholars are required to commence their research / study program within two-years of receiving the Scholarship Notification Letter of Offer from the American Australian Association

Application Submission

What is the deadline for Scholarship applications?

  • The American Australian Association opens two scholarship rounds each year.
    ROUND ONE: AUSTRALIA TO US (A-U) - Application period is open from 1 Feb - 15 Apr each year. 
    ROUND TWO: US TO AUSTRALIA (U-A) - Application period is open from 1 Sep - 15 Oct each year.

    Please note: The online application form is only accessible during these periods.  Complete applications must be received by the due deadlines to be considered.

How do I submit my application?

  • All applicants are required to complete an online application form.  You will be required to set-up a site account.  Within your account you can save, leave and go back to your application at any time before submitting by the due date.  You will be required to upload supporting documents to this online form.

How do I set up a site account and register as a Email Subscriber - Non Member?

  1. Go to the Scholarship page you would like to apply for via the scholarship links on the home page
  2. Click on the "Application Form" link or "Apply Now" button
  3. Select "Click here to Register" link
  4. Select "Email Subscriber (Non-Member)" >> click the Continue button
  5. Fill in the remaining details
  6. Return to the Scholarship page you would like to apply for and repeat step 2
  7. Sign In using the Log In details you just created
  8. Start your application!

How will I know when my application has been received?

  • Completed applications will be confirmed within 24-hours via an automated message.  

When will successful applicants be notified for the Australia to US Scholarship Program?

  • A short list of applicants will be contacted to undertake an interview with management of the American Australian Association.  These interviews will be conducted by video conference using Blue Jeans in June.  Successful applicants will be notified soon thereafter.

When will successful applicants be notified for the US to Australia Scholarship Program?

    • A short list of applicants will be contacted to undertake an interview with management of the American Australian Association.  These interviews will be conducted by video conference using Blue Jeans in January.  Successful applicants will be notified soon thereafter.


Visa

Does the American Australian Association arrange my immigration visa?

  • No.  It is the responsibility of the applicant to obtain the necessary immigration visa and to abide by the visa conditions set. In most cases, the applicant's home university or their destination university will assist with these arrangements.
