What is the American-Australian Veterans' Fund Scholarship Program?

  • Each year the Association hosts two veteran scholarship rounds, which support international study and exchange in each direction between our two countries.  Scholarships are awarded up to a maximum of US$40,000 for one-year, to support undergraduate or graduate study across all disciplinary fields. The scholarship award may be used to support travel, living, tuition or other associated costs. Scholarship funds may be used in conjunction with other veteran support, such as the GI Bill. 

How do I apply for the Australia to USA direction?

  • The Australia to USA veteran round will open on February 1 and close March 15 each year.

How do I apply for the USA to Australia direction?

  • The USA to Australia veteran round will open on September 1 and close October 15 each year.

Does the Association help arrange university or institutional affiliations in the US or Australia?

  • No. Applicants must make their own arrangements for university affiliation and have a confirmed placement before any scholarship funds are made available. 

Eligibility

Who is eligible for the American-Australian Veterans' Fund Scholarship Program?

Australia to USA round 1:

  • Applicants coming from Australia to the US must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia (dual US citizens/permanent residents are not eligible);
  • Applicants must be honorably discharged post 9/11; and
  • Applicants must be planning to undertake a minimum of one-year full time study at an American University.

    Please note, it is not necessary to have already been accepted into the institution at the time of application. Prospective students are welcome to apply. Recipients will have a maximum of 2 years from the date of the grant being awarded to accept and use the award.  Any remaining or unused grant amounts will be forfeited after this time.

US to Australia round 2:

  • Applicants coming from the United States to Australia must be US citizens or permanent residents the US (dual Australian citizens/permanent residents are not eligible);
  • Applicants must be honorably discharged post 9/11; and
  • Applicants must be planning to undertake a minimum of one-year full time study at an Australian University.

    Please note, it is not necessary to have already been accepted into the institution at the time of application. Prospective students are welcome to apply. Recipients will have a maximum of 2 years from the date of the grant being awarded to accept and use the award.  Any remaining or unused grant amounts will be forfeited after this time.

My course of study will not include a formal research component. Am I eligible?

  • Study without a defined purpose is less compelling for a scholarship award. Applicants must explain why being in the Australia/the US is important to their research or study.

Are sabbaticals supported by the Association's awards?

  • As a general rule our award does not support Scholarships in sabbaticals.

Are their minimum/ maximum time restrictions on the duration of the Scholarship?

  • Scholarships must be for a minimum of 6 months, a maximum of 1 year.

When do I have to begin the Scholarship?

  • Selected Scholars have to start the Scholarship within 24 months of the date they sign the acceptance letter.

I'm an Australian citizen but I'm already studying/ living in the US, am I still eligible to apply for the A to US Scholarships?

  • Yes, you can apply if you have already begun your studies in Australia or the US. Please note you need to have at least one year of study left to apply.



Budget & Finances

What items can be included in the budget?

  • Scholarship funds may be used to support travel, living, tuition or other associated educational costs. Scholarship funds can be used in conjunction with other veteran support such as the GI Bill. Download a budget template to use in your application here

Can I accept other grants or awards in addition to the American Australian Association Scholarship?

  • You may accept additional grants to satisfy your budget needs as described in the application form. However, you must detail the type of grant(s) and amount(s). The Association reserves the right to decline an application if the corresponding budget cannot be justified.

Am I responsible for any taxes incurred as a result of being selected as a Scholar?

  • Yes. Scholars are responsible for any and all taxes incurred. We strongly advise you to seek your own independent taxation counsel.

Can the Scholarship be used to pay for family/dependent travel?

  • No, the Scholarship is to assist the scholar themselves and not their dependents.

If awarded, when must I begin my scholarship?

  • We require scholars to begin their scholarships within 24 months of their acceptance letter.

Application Submission

How do I submit my application?

  • Applications must be submitted online. The application form will be made available when each round is open. You will need to set up a site account as an "Email Subscriber (Non-Member)".

How do I set up a site account and register as a Email Subscriber - Non Member?

  1. Go to the Scholarship page you would like to apply for via the scholarship links on the home page
  2. Click on the "Application Form" link or "Apply Now" button
  3. Select "Click here to Register" link
  4. Select "Email Subscriber (Non-Member)" >> click the Continue button
  5. Fill in the remaining details
  6. Return to the Scholarship page you would like to apply for and repeat step 2
  7. Sign In using the Log In details you just created
  8. Start your application!

How will I know when my application has been received?

  • We will generally confirm receipt of your application within 24 hours via an automated message.  

When will successful applicants be notified for the Australia to US Scholarship Program?

  • A select group of applicants will be contacted to interview with the Association via Skype in June or July and successful applicants will be notified soon thereafter.

When will successful applicants be notified for the US to Australia Scholarship Program?

  • A select group of applicants will be contacted to interview with the Association via Skype in January and successful applicants will be notified soon thereafter.

Visa

Does the American Australian Association arrange my immigration visa?

  • No, it is the responsibility of the applicant to obtain the necessary immigration visa. In most cases either the students' home university or their destination university will assist with these arrangements.
