ANZAC DAY & VETERANS' LUNCH

On Wednesday, 25 April, the Australian Consulate General, New York in partnership with the American Australian Association commemorated ANZAC Day with an inaugural Veterans’ lunch at Cipriani Wall Street, preceded by a church service at Trinity Church.  Over 400 government and business leaders attended, along with US, Australian and New Zealand service personnel and military veterans from WWII through to current day.  We were especially honored to have present several members of The Greatest Generation, including Peter Du Pre aged 94, who closed the lunch with a powerful and moving rendition of Waltzing Matilda, on his harmonica.

Special guest, ADM Mike Mullen, USN (Ret.) former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff gave the keynote address and presented awards to the Guardians of ANZAC Day and the Association’s first class of American and Australian veteran scholars.  In its first year, the Association’s Veterans’ Scholarship Fund awarded 10 scholarships to support five American and five Australian veterans to undertake university level education in each others’ country.  Thanks to the generosity of all event sponsors, proceeds from the lunch will enable the Association to double its efforts and support a new class of future veteran scholarship recipients.
