Artist profile
Rebecca Baumann
Dame Joan Sutherland Fund recipient, Visual Artist

Rebecca Baumann was born in 1983 in Perth, Western Australia, where she continues to live and work. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Curtin University of Technology, Perth in 2003.

Through a formal and conceptual exploration of materials, Baumann’s recent works have critically interrogated ideas of happiness and celebration in contemporary life. Often kinetic and ephemeral in nature, her sculptures and installations seek to affect the audience through their experiential, momentary and emotive qualities. Baumann’s current area of interest, the relationship between colour and emotion, has been informed by further research into psychology, sociology, colour theory and art history.

Since 2003, Baumann has exhibited Australia wide, participating in various group exhibitions, including: Contemporary Australia: Women, Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane (2012); Primavera, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney (2011); NEW11, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2011); and SILVER: Artrage 25, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (2008). She has also held solo exhibitions and performances including Untitled State of Mind, Gallery ON, Poznań, Poland (2010); Action #1: Artists in Response to City Spaces, Perth Cultural Centre (2010); and from the beginning; one more time, Fremantle Arts Centre (2009).

Baumann has been the recipient of the Art & Australia / Credit Suisse Private Banking Contemporary Art Award (2011) and the Qantas Spirit of Youth Award (2009). In 2012 she will undertake a residency in New York at The International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP), with support from the Dame Joan Sutherland Fund.
