“Basically, I started singing when I started talking. Music has just been my saving grace my whole life” – Mariah Carey

These famous words from Mariah Carey describe Kristen Plati’s early childhood perfectly. Kristen’s sassy and powerful voice is breathtaking and enchanting. Her range and versatility create a stirring vocal that adds a unique flavor to any song and style she sings. Kristen is also an accomplished keyboard player, accompanying herself at venues around Perth. Kristen performs songs from every genre and era, including country, contemporary and classical.

Kristen started singing lessons at 5 years of age, and piano at 11. She instantly took to the stage and began to perform as often as she could. Throughout the years Kristen has taken part in singing competitions, concerts, eisteddfods and showcases, as well as dance concerts, musical theatre productions and modeling shows. Her all round experience in the entertainment industry has given her the confidence and expertise to perform like a seasoned professional. By 2012, at 20 years of age, Kristen had completed an Advanced Diploma of Contemporary Voice, as well as a Certificate 2 in Musical Theatre, both at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts. And in 2013, she began a 2 year Acting Course at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.

Who are you as an artist?
I am a singer and actress from Perth, living in Manhattan. I am a recent graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (AADA) and am now auditioning and working in New York City.
What prompted you to come to the US?
New York City is the centre of the performing universe and I wanted to immerse myself in it. AADA is a renowned school, and I wanted to receive the best training I could.
What did your course/project involve?
We did a lot of work on technique and developing our own process for character development. We did movement, singing, speech and acting classes daily to hone our skills, as well as camera and business classes to prepare us for the industry.
What were the highlights of your experience?
Making new friends and growing, not only as an actor but as a person. I learned more about myself in those 18 months than I had in 20 years. It also helped me to gain more confidence in myself and to trust myself.
Where did you find inspiration?
My friends and watching shows. Those around me, working hard for what they want, putting it all on the line for their passion. The same goes for watching shows, whether it be on Broadway or at the Academy, everyone always gives it 100% and puts themselves out there to tell the stories they are passionate about.
What will you take away from this experience?
To never give up, I know this is exactly where I want to be and what I want to be doing. Now I know that I am willing to put myself out there, and take rejection and keep working for what I want, I know that I will whole-heartedly give it my all.
What is your favorite piece of work that resulted from this experience?
I worked on a play called "Female Transport" by Steve Gooch, and the character of Charlotte was very difficult but very rewarding for me. She's so complex but so human at the same time. I loved having the opportunity to play her. My whole cast was so wonderful, it was an incredibly rewarding experience.
What are you currently working on?
I am auditioning for short films and feature films, and also writing my first ever short film, which I am really excited about - these days, it is all about creating your own work and getting yourself out there.
What is your vision for the future?
I would love to be doing singing gigs, as well as filming. My end goal is Broadway.
What advice would you give other artists aspiring to come to the US?
Jump headfirst into, don't look back, and give it your all. You are a long way from home, and there will be times when you get homesick and want to give up, but just keep going. The rewards make it all worth it, and it gets easier.
