Kim Brockett is a Melbourne-based curator. She received her Bachelor of Arts (Art History & Cinema Studies) and Master of Art Curatorship from the University of Melbourne and is currently on the Board of artist-run initiative Bus Projects. Kim has worked at various galleries, festivals and institutions in Australia, Singapore and the US, including an internship at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 2013. Recent curatorial projects include: touring exhibition Signature Style at various regional galleries in Victoria (2013-2014); Bon Mot at Bus Projects (2013); Aesthetics Room at Mr Kitly (2012), BLESS N°38 Windowgarden at Craft (2011) and SUPER MARKET at Gertrude Contemporary (2010).

Who are you as an artist?
I am an independent curator, writer and arts administrator based in Melbourne. I am on the Board of artist-run initiative Bus Projectsand have worked primarily in the visual arts at institutions like the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Art Stage Singapore.
What prompted you to come to the US?
Looking at the state of arts funding in Victoria, I felt it was necessary to learn more about fundraising if I was to create a sustainable career for myself and colleagues. New York is the perfect place to do this, and I first came to New York in Fall 2013 to intern at the Museum of Modern Art's Major Gifts department before continuing at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in Spring 2014.
What did your course/project involve?
I interned with the Corporate Development team at the Guggenheim. Working closely with a group of incredibly talented and ambitious professionals for three months was an extremely satisfying experience. I learnt so much from being involved in the day-to-day operations of what it's like to work on corporate partnerships and sponsorship at an internationally renowned museum.
What were the highlights of your experience?
Meeting other Guggenheim interns from all over the world was definitely a highlight --- everyone is so talented! The internship program's weekly activities and field trips were also great, especially the visit to Alvarez Fine Art Services, a paper conservation studio, and Storm King Art Center, an outdoor sculpture park in upstate New York.
Where did you find inspiration? 
My managers at the Guggenheim had a wealth of knowledge between them and were so generous with their time. New York is homto so many fantastic museums and galleries that every weekend posed a conundrum as to what to do next!
What will you take away from this experience?
I feel more confident now when I think about fundraising. Granted the New York approach may differ from Melbourne's, but there are certainly some common principles that still apply.
What is your favorite piece of work that resulted form this experience?
I was given the opportunity to be involved in forward planning for the Museum's future partnerships, an exciting major proposal that hope will come to fruition.
What are you currently working on?
Currently I am back in Melbourne and am thrilled to be working at the Malthouse Theatre as their Development Coordinator. I continue to sit on the Board of artist-run initiative Bus Projects and I write for Vault magazine.
What is your vision for the future?
I'm looking forward to continuing the progression of individual and corporate giving in the visual and performing arts in Melbourne. Coming from a curatorial background, it's an interesting match to fundraising as I'm coming from an informed position from being so
involved in the arts.
What advice would you give other artists aspiring to come to the US?
Make the most of your time by speaking to as many people as you can! Also, do lots of research in order to prioritise---there's so much to do in New York it's easy to get sidetracked.
