Aristea Mellos

Aristea Mellos is an Australian composer who currently lives and works in New York City.

Her compositions are regularly performed throughout Australia and the United States in venues such as Spectrum New Music (Manhattan), The Independent Theater (Sydney), Lewellyn Hall (ANU – Canberra), and Kilbourn Hall (Rochester). Aristea’s works have been performed by the Cuong Vu Trio, Ensemble ExhAust, The Australian Youth Orchestra, and The Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic. Additionally, her music has been featured in Ossia’s 2011-2012 Concert Series, and has been broadcast on the Australian Fine Music Station, 2MBS FM.

In 2012 Aristea graduated with a Master of Music degree in composition from the Eastman School of Music, where she held the Paul Sacher Scholarship. Whilst at Eastman, Aristea studied with Professors David Liptak, Robert Morris, and Vincent Lenti, as well as the award-winning composer Lisa Bielawa. In 2011 Aristea was awarded the Belle S. Gitelman Prize for compositional merit.

In 2010, Aristea graduated with honours (first class) from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she held the Doris Burnett Ford Scholarship and The Roy Agnew Memorial Fund. 

Aristea has been a fellow at the Australian Youth Orchestra’s Composer School (2010) and the Bowdoin International Music Festival (2009). From 2011-12 Aristea sat on the board of Ossia ( and she has recently been named the Executive Director of the Switch Ensemble (

Upcoming projects include a collaboration with Canadian poet Emily Kendal Fray for Art Song Lab 2013, and commissions from Burnadette Harvey and Emily Rose-Sarkova.

In the fall of 2013, Aristea will start her candidacy for a Doctor of Performing Arts at The Eastman School of Music.
