Ms. Jodie Bradby

Research Properties: Mechanical properties of materials
Jodie will pursue doctoral studies at the Case Western Reserve University investigating the nanoscale mechanical damage of semiconductor materials, which has vast implications for the electronics industry. Upon return to Australia Ms. Bradby intends to establish an Australian research group in the mechanical properties of small-scale structures after completing her PhD and returning to Australia.
Ms. Katherine Humphry
University of Western Australia/Harvard University.
Research Interest: Experimental condensed matter physics
Ms. Humphry is currently at the IBM Almaden Research Center in California as an intern in the Exploratory Magnetic Media and Phenomena group. At Harvard she intends to conduct research in the field of spintronics, and on completion of her PhD intends to establish her own spintronics research unit in an Australian institution. (Spintronics is a field that links quantum semiconductor structures and magnetic device physics and has major significance for the electronics industry and the manufacturing of compact discs and DVDs.)

Dr. Nicholas Shackel
Centenary Institute of Cancer Medicine and Cell Biology/Duke Medical Center
Research Interest: Pathobiology of human cirrhosis
Dr. Shackel received his PhD from the University of Sydney and was a University Medalist at the University of New South Wales in Physiology and Biochemistry. Dr. Shackel will study at the Duke University Medical Center investigating liver cirrhosis as part of his postdoctoral research in understanding pathobiology of human cirrhosis. Upon his return to Australia Dr. Shackel plans to work as a physician-scientist in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at an Australian university and teaching hospital.

Dr. Cuong Duy Tran
University of Adelaide/University of Colorado
Research Interest: micronutrient supplementation & gut health of indigenous Australians.
 He will participate in designing interventions for potential therapies in improvement of gut function and health. Dr. Tran intends on his return to Australia to establish his own center for micronutrient research. Dr. Tran arrived in Australia as a displaced boat person from Vietnam.


Mr. Eric May
University of W.A./ US National Institute of Science & Technology
Research Interest: applied thermodynamics
Mr. May is a PhD candidate in applied thermodynamics at the University of Western Australia, specializing in advanced measurements of complex fluid mixtures. Mr. May has been asked to pursue his postdoctoral study at the US National Institute for Science and Technology in the Fluid Science Group in Gaithesburg, Maryland. Mr. May has already patented his own invention, a device that optimizes the production of gas condensates from gas reserves. He intends on his return to Australia to develop his academic findings into commercial applications in the petrochemical industry.
