Geoffrey Matthews 
University of Adelaide / Harvard Medical School and Dana Farber Cancer Institute
Research Interest: Blood Cancer Research
Geoff will further his career in blood cancer research at the Dana Farber Cancer Center, Harvard Medical School, where he will utilize specialized model systems to investigate novel therapeutic agents against multiple myeloma. He aims to determine whether selective therapies can prevent tumor cell growth and the optimal combination of drugs that maximize treatment effectiveness, while minimizing side-effects in patients with this disorder.

Ron Tidhar
University of Melbourne/ Stanford University 
Research Interest: Engineering and Management Science
At Stanford University’s Master of Science program, Ron will use mathematical modeling and optimization techniques to investigate entrepreneurial management and finance strategies. In particular, he will focus on the area of innovation in technology based firms. Ron will also focus on Chinese studies, through involvement in Stanford’s Asia Center. He plans to use his studies at Stanford as a launch pad for research into improving collaborative economic and scientific ties between the US, Australia and China.

Ashleigh Hood
University of Melbourne/ Yale University
Research Interest: Precambrian Geology
Ashleigh recently finished her PhD in Geology at the University of Melbourne where she studied Precambrian carbonates and the oxygenation of Earth’s early oceans. She will be working at Yale University as a postdoctoral researcher, extending our understanding of ocean evolution back over 2.5 billion years using new geo-chemical techniques.

Matthew Pinson
Australian National University/ University of Chicago 
Research Interest: Physics
Matthew will take up a position as a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Chicago, working with Professor Tom Witten on issues in the field of granular materials. Researchers at University of Chicago and collaborators have invented soft robotic devices that use the unusual properties of granular matter to perform difficult tasks, such as picking up objects of unknown shape.Matthew, a gold medalist at the International Physics Olympiad will receive his PhD in Physics from MIT this Fall.

James Bullock

Research Interest: Technology
James’ doctoral placement at the University of California, Berkeley will focus on the development of novel “carrier-selective-contacts” for high efficiency silicon solar cells.This advancement in solar cell contacting technology has the potential to increase the output power of solar cells whilst significantly simplifying their architecture and fabrication procedure.

Alexander Smith 
Bond University/ Harvard University 
Research Interest: Sustainable Business 
While at Harvard University’s John F Kennedy School of Government, Alexander will try to find cost-effective ways to foster public-private collaborations that can secure jobs for the long-term unemployed; ensure greater economic self-determination for Indigenous and rural communities; and increasing the chances for those living with disability to find fulfillment in employment and education.

Angela Lek 
University of Sydney / Harvard Medical School
Research Interest: Medicine
Angela completed her PhD at the University of Sydney and is now a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard Medical School, working on translational research of muscular dystrophy. Under the supervision of Professor Louis Kunkel, she is working to generate a zebrafish model of facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD). Using zebrafish as a disease model allows for large-scale chemical screens to be performed, potentially identifying compounds with the ability to attenuate disease progression.

Kandice Varcin
University of New South Wales/ Harvard Medical School, Boston Children's Hospital
Research Interest: Pediatrics
Kandice joined the Laboratories of Cognitive Neuroscience at Harvard Medical School/Boston Children’s Hospital as a postdoctoral fellow in August 2013. Under the mentorship of Professor Charles Nelson, she is currently examining early markers of neurodevelopmental disorders in infants and children. The overarching goal of her work is to develop methods for early detection of neurodevelopmental disorders, so as to intervene earlier than is currently feasible.

Benjamin Morrell
University of Sydney/ Texas A&M University/MIT/NASA Johnson Space Center
Research Interest: Engineering                           
Benjamin's PhD research is developing navigation and path planning algorithms to enhance the capability of robots to navigate safely and efficiently without external input.The research has applications in space exploration, unmanned aerial vehicles, and robotics in general.Working closely with groups at Texas A&M University, MIT and NASA Johnson Space Centre, his plan is for the algorithms to be tested with a robotic spacecraft on board the International Space Station.

Petter Nyman
University of Melbourne / University of Washington
Research Interest: Hydrology
Petter's research seeks to develop models that enable land and water managers to better predict the effects of climate change, wildfire and drought on water supply from forested catchment. At the University of Washington he will be working with the Eco-hydrology Research Group to build a framework for a catchment evolution model for fire-prone Eucalyptus forests in southeast Australia.

Amy Chandran
University of Technology, Sydney / Harvard University 
Research Interest: Public Policy
Amy will undertake the Masters in Public Policy at the John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Her research will focus on how social investment initiatives and behavioral insights can be used to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of social policies. Prior to undertaking this study, Amy was a policy adviser at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in Canberra.

Teresa Bonello
University of New South Wales / University of North Carolina
Research Interest: Medicine 
Through her work at the University of North Carolina, Teresa seeks to define the structural machinery linking cells together and the network of proteins regulating tissue assembly and maintenance. Understanding their normal mechanism of action, will ultimately allow us to understand how these anchor points are altered in human tumors.
Claire Gordon
University of Melbourne/ Columbia University  
Research Interest: Biomedical Informatics
Claire Gordon is a PhD student at the University of Melbourne and a Master of Arts in Biomedical Informatics student at Columbia University, New York. Her career goal is to be a physician-scientist in transplantation infectious disease specializing in viral immunity.
Morgan James 
University of Newcastle/ Medical University of South Carolina
Research Interest: Neuroscience
Morgan is doing his post-doctoral training at the Medical University of South Carolina, under the mentorship of Dr. Gary Aston-Jones.  Here, he is receiving training in cutting edge neuroscience techniques such as optogenetics, DREADDs (designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs) and in-vivo electrophysiology that allow for more precise interrogation of neural circuits. 
Gabrielle Josling 
University of Melbourne / Pennsylvania State University 
Research Interest: Molecular Biology
Gabrielle’s postdoctoral research will aim to identify the triggers that lead the malaria parasite to differentiate into its transmissible form. This process is an essential part of the lifecycle, and thus understanding more about it may lead to the development of novel antimalarial drugs that would be an invaluable tool in eradicating malaria. 
Alexis Whitton           
University of New South Wales/Harvard Medical School          
Research Interest: Neurobiology
Alexis will undertake a project to identify biological points of rarity that distinguish bipolar disorder from major depression, in order to enhance the accuracy and timeliness of diagnosis for individuals suffering from these conditions.  To do this she will focus on the neural circuitry that supports ‘reward learning’, which refers to the way that we respond to and learn from positive reinforcement.
