If the past 12 months have taught us anything, it’s that if you managed to shower and comb the cornflakes out of your hair before your first video conference you’ve had a great morning. For many of us, 2020 was all about ‘surviving’ and shelving ‘thriving’ for next year.
But somehow, some of us, managed to take the lemons the pandemic had on offer and made some juicy lemonade!
Our next AWNY event will bring together four women who through sheer grit and determination (or in some cases not-so-great timing) started a business during the COVID pandemic. Join us for a virtual panel discussion to hear their stories, learn from their experiences, and ask the burning question you have about taking a hobby and making it a cash-generating hustle!

Meet the Panelists:
Shweta Khare
Shweta opened her first cafe, gertrude, in August 2020 smack bang in the middle of the pandemic! gertrude is located on the Upper West side, offering specialty coffee and a strong in-house baking program with a focus on seasonality and locally sourced produce. Inspired by an international palette, you’ll also find the hard-to-come-by Australian classics. Prior to moving into hospitality, Shweta had two corporate lives: first as an economic consultant in international tax and then as an HR strategy consultant before leaving to pursue her side passions, food and hospitality.
Jennifer Azzopardi
Jennifer moved to New York City from Melbourne, Australia in October 2019 with her husband and mini dachshund, Linguine. While awaiting her work permit in early 2020 she registered for a candle making class to fill the time. Of course, the global pandemic had other plans and the class was cancelled. Undeterred, Jennifer decided to teach herself using online tutorials and quickly fell in love with the process, embarking on a quest to start her own, fully-natural range Scent + Sprout.
Tarley Jordan
Tarley is a marketer passionate about telling diverse stories. By day, she runs comms for an architecture and design studio. By night, she creates art for the Neon Stitch Club where ancient practice of embroidery and the energy of neon collide. She’s been a long-time volunteer with AWNY and has helped tell the story of over 100 aussie and kiwi womxn who have made it in New York.
Amelia Chappelow
Amelia was one of public radio’s first online producers at the ABC and modernised live radio production for triple j, where she launched the Like a Version podcast. She currently works with podcast comedy network Earwolf in New York after developing audio projects with Spotify. In early 2021, Amelia launched Linda Marigliano’s Tough Love podcast as her first independent audio project.
Meggie Palmer (moderator)

confidence and negotiation and to give you a pep talk when you need it most. In her former life, she was an award-winning journalist turned entrepreneur. She spent 15 years as a journalist and Foreign Correspondent. Traveling from Syria to Italy telling stories for networks including BBC World, CNBC, Channel 7 and Vogue.
