Australian Women Making it in New York
Guest Speaker: Allison Jurjens, MA Psychology
10:30am, Wednesday September 12, Australian Consulate
Thank you to everyone who attended our August 8th speaker series morning featuring a talk by artists Rebecca McIntosh & Victoria Johnstone. It was certainly a fun morning with 20 ladies in attendance. Thank you again to the 'Love TV girls' for sharing your adventures with us here in New York City.
This month AWNY’s speaker series welcomes AWNY member Allison Jurjens, who has a Masters in Psychology and is a certified life coach. Allison specializes in supporting both new parents and families. She also works with individuals, helping them achieve their particular goals. This promises to be a highly insightful and relevant discussion and an opportunity to get to know yourself better. Not to be missed!
Allison was born and raised in rural New South Wales and lived on a farm until the age of 13. She first moved to Manhattan in the year 2000. After a successful corporate career and the birth of her children, Allison decided to follow her passion and make a career change. She studied at The New School and received her Masters in General Psychology, specializing in Bowlby's Attachment Theory and Developmental Neuroscience and became a Certified Life Coach. She is a great resource in terms of parent education and support, as well as the sometimes perplexing cultural aspects of lifestyle differences between Australia and the US.
Allison will highlight aspects of John Bowlby's Attachment Theory. The attachment system is active throughout the human lifespan and shapes the architecture of the developing mind, which of course affects thoughts, feelings, behavior etc. Allison will cover:
How attachment is measured in adults and why
How this relates to every individual on the planet - we are social creatures, just like the primates
Adult romantic relationships, family interactions, parent behavior with the developing child.
How to help our selves - mindfulness, awareness, insight, noticing our responses, "reflective functioning", family, environment, genes, nutrition, emotion, memory. Ourselves in Australia, ourselves in New York.
