United States Studies Center

The Association is committed to the intellectual development and educational exchange between Australia and the United States. The Association supported the establishment of a United States Studies Center in Australia which is a joint initiative between the American Australian Association Ltd. and the Australian Government which committed funds of AU$25 million to the Center. Significant funds for the Centre’s endowment are also provided by the private sector as well as the State/Territory government in which the Centre is located. The Association is engaged in raising funds from the corporate sector to finance the United States Studies Center.

The Centre will build a reputation for academic excellence, independence and objectivity.

The Centre will offer a range of postgraduate research studies at the Masters and PhD levels, facilitate professional academic exchanges, operate as a research center of excellence on US studies and produce scholarly articles and reports.

United States Studies Center objectives:

• Deepen the appreciation and understanding of the United States’ culture, political climate and government and strengthen the relationship between the countries

• Complement and provide leadership on current Australian-United States’ educational endeavors

• Increase the awareness of the study of United States’ politics and government

• Promote collaborative research between the countries

• Operate as a think-tank for the Australian-United States relationship

The American Australian Association Limited in Australia was responsible for selecting the Host University, and also will monitor the performance of the Centre and provide funding for the Centre. It also will oversee the Centre’s endowment and may also provide funding for other programs with similar objectives at other Australian universities.

On 14 November 2006, the Association announced the selection of Sydney University as the Host University for the Centre. The Centre commenced operations in January 2007, with academic programs and courses offered in 2008.
