Australia's Outback in the 21st Century (Part II)
   

 

30 October 2017| Australian Consulate in New York

On Monday, October 30, around 80 members and friends joined us at the Australian Consulate-General in New York to hear from AIATSIS CEO Craig Ritchie and The Pew Charitable Trusts Outback to Oceans Australia Deputy Director Pepe Clarke, who spoke on the subject of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia in the 21st Century.

On Monday, September 18 the American Australian Association partnered with ANZ, Bush Heritage Australia and the Australian Wildlife Conservancy(AWC) to host around 50 members and friends for a discussion on Australia's Outback in the 21st Century. Guests heard from both Gerard O’Neill, CEO of Bush Heritage, and Atticus Fleming, Chief Executive of AWC, who spoke about their respective groups’ innovative conservation efforts and the challenges they face in preserving and restoring the Outback’s unique ecology and wildlife. Many thanks to Gerard, Atticus and their teams for two fascinating presentations and ANZ for hosting!


       
Science on Tap
   

 

28 August 2017| Brooklyn Brewery

On Monday evening, the Association held its first ever Science on Tap event at The Brooklyn Brewery. Over 70 members and friends joined the panel, featuring Nobel Laureate and The Australian National University Vice-Chancellor Brian Schmidt, PBS SpaceTime Host Matt O’Dowd, and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Administrator Philip Liebrecht, to discuss everything from the expansion of the universe to gravitational waves on Venus to the importance of the American-Australian space partnership. Big thanks to The Brooklyn Brewery for hosting, our food vendors The Australian NYC and to Brian, Matt and Philip for leading a fascinating discussion!


       
Summer Cruise
   

 

20 July 2017| New York Skyport Marina

On Thursday, July 20 the American Australian Association held its annual Westpac Summer Cruise aboard the Harbor Lights. Over 300 guests showed up to take in views of New York harbor, highlighted by a picture-perfect shot of the Statue of Liberty at sunset. Pies and sausage rolls, courtesy of The Australian NYC, were available all night, and the Hawai’ian theme was embraced by many. A big thanks to everyone that joined us on board!


       

 Coral Sea Veterans Reception

   
 

 5 May 2017| Australian Consulate-General, New York

On Friday, May 5, guests joined the American Australian Association at the Australian Consulate-General in New York City to continue a week of commemoration for the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea. The honored guests at the reception were the seven WWII Battle of the Coral Sea veterans - Bill White, Gordon Johnson, Derek Holyoake, Norm Tame; WWII Pacific War veteran RADM Andrew Robertson; and John Hancock, Roger Spooner and Wendell Thrasher from the United States. AAA is honored to have hosted these eight veterans and their families and is extremely grateful to them and all of the servicemen and women who fought to protect the values cherished by our two nations.


       
ANZAC Day Service, Boston
 
   
 

29 April 2017 |Harvard-Epworth United Methodist Church, Boston

On Saturday, April 29, the American Australian Association and Kia Ora New England invited members and friends to the Harvard-Epworth United Methodist Church in Cambridge, MA for an ANZAC Day commemorative service. Guests enjoyed a potluck reception following the service.

25 April 2017 | Vietnam War Memorial, New York

On Tuesday, April 25, over 200 people gathered at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in New York City to remember and honor the ANZAC’s who served at Gallipoli in WWI, as well as all past and present Australian and New Zealand service men and women.

Hosted by the Australian and New Zealand Consuls-General, and joined by the Turkish Consul-General, former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, American Australian Association President Amb. John Berry (Ret'd), and the diplomatic corps, the service was then followed by a 'Gunfire Breakfast.'

On Tuesday, December 13, over 70 of our members and friends joined us at The Australian NYC to celebrate the holiday season together in New York City. A huge thank you to The Australian, Babu Ji NYC Benson's NYC, The Liberty NYC, and  The Lucky Bee NYC for their generous contributions to the evening!

On Monday, October 31, race goers gathered to celebrate Australia’s premier horse race at The Liberty NYC. With guests dressed in their best racewear, fashion prizes, provided by The Liberty, WITH INTEGRITY Australia, and Foster Entertainment, were awarded to Most Classy Lady, Most Dapper Male, Most Charming Couple, and Most Impressive Hat. The Qantas Airways Melbourne Cup Raffle awarded two round-trip airfares from New York to Australia to the lucky grand prize winner. Roses Only NYC, T2 Tea, and The Liberty provided the runners-up prizes.

On Wednesday, November 16, the American Australian Association partnered with the Australian Consulate-General to give AAA members a chance to welcome the Association’s new president, Ambassador John Berry (Ret’d). As the former American Ambassador to Australia, John spoke of his reverence for the American – Australian relationship and presented his vision for the organization, insights into the current political landscape, and more.

Over 80 Aussies and friends joined us on the rooftop of the Northern Territory. Thankfully the rain held off and allowed guests to enjoy meeting new and old friends to the smooth tunes of DJs Cam Run & Eddie Mac on a fantastic summer evening in Brooklyn.




American Australian Association's Westpac Summer Cruise
   
 

14 July 2016 | Harbor Lights, New York

Over 300 guests boarded the Harbor Lights for the AAA's Westpac Summer Cruise on Thursday, July 14. Guests enjoyed a perfect summer night sailing the East and Hudson rivers while feasting on pies and sausage rolls from The Australian NYC, dancing on mid deck and enjoying drinks and photos with the State of Liberty, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Williamsburg bridges for backdrops.


AAA & AWNY 9/11 Memorial Private Guided Tour

80 American Australian Association and Australian Women in New York members and friends joined us for an intimate and private guided tour of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

Following the tour, guests gathered at Club Quarters, a delightful terrace overlooking the 9/11 Memorial pools to mingle over complimentary appetizers and drink specials.

On Tuesday, 15 March, 80 members and friends joined us at our March Reception at 
Interface NYC, a dynamic event space and creative membership lounge in Chelsea. Guests enjoyed lamingtons from The Thirsty Koala, as well as plentiful canapés and Australian wine and beer. The venue was beautifully decorated with flowers from The Wild Bunch NYC.


Australia Day Black Tie Gala

The 2016 American Australian Association Australia Black Tie Gala presented by National Australia Bank and supported by G'Day USA was held on Friday, January 22 in the grand ballroom of Cipriani Wall Street. A celebration of Australia Day and Australia in the United States, over 400 guests attended this glamorous event, including special guests the Hon Julie Bishop MP; Honoree Gordon Elliott CEO of Follow Productions; vocalist, actress and TV personality, Marcia Hines AM; chef and media personality Mario Batali; Master of Ceremonies, actor and TV host Nick Hardcastle; indie pop musician Georgi Kay; and Broadway performer Amelia Cormack.

150 members and friends joined us to celebrate the holiday season at our annual Holiday Reception, held at the Australian Consulate-General in New York. Guests enjoyed handcrafted cocktails from the Manhattan Cricket Club, meat pies and sausage rolls from The Australian NYC as well as plentiful hors d'oeuvres and Australian wine and beer.

Around 120 guests celebrated Australia’s premier horse race at New York’s ultimate Melbourne Cup Party at

Spotlight On: Aussies in Silicon Alley

Our fourth installment of the AAA Spotlight Speaker Series focused on ‘Aussies in Silicon Alley’, young Australian entrepreneurs who are making waves in New York’s tech industry. We were fortunate to have four speakers share their experiences with an audience of 70 at The Farm Soho. Speakers included: Founder and CEO of Shareablee, Tania Yuki; Founder and CEO of Float, Glenn Rogers; Co-Founder of LookBooker, Giorgia Rossi; and Principal of BBG Ventures, Nisha Dua.

Over 90 members and friends gathered at Northern Territory Bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn for a summer rooftop BBQ on a warm and sunny August afternoon. The barbeque included a sausage sizzle, steak sandwich, Portobello mushroom sandwich and corn on the cob.

14th Annual Wine Tasting Dinner
 

 

22 June 2015 | David Burke Fishtail, New York

Our 14th Annual Wine Tasting Dinner was held in the private dining room of David Burke Fishtail on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The evening featured a three-course dinner paired with cool climate Australian and American wines presented by Anthony Allport of The Fine Wine Agency. Starting with a reception featuring Jansz Sparkling Rose, the evening continued with a side-by-side tasting of eight Australian and American cool climate wines over four different varietals.


Spotlight On: Food + Drink Aussiepreneurs

The focus of our third Spotlight Speaker Series installment was ‘Food + Drink Aussiepreneurs’, young Australian entrepreneurs who are making their mark in NYC’s food and beverage industry. We were fortunate to have five speakers share their experiences in the intimate setting of Toby's Estate Brooklyn. Speakers included: Founder of Bluestone Lane Coffee, Nick Stone; Managing Partner of Burke & Wills and the Manhattan Cricket Club, Matilda Boland; Co-founder of Two Hands NYC, Giles Russell; Author, Chef and Australian MasterChef Finalist, Daniel Churchill; and Top Chef Contestant and Chef de Cuisine & Partner of Root & Bone NYC, Janine Booth.

 

Young New Yorkers Night

Our first Young New Yorkers Night was held at The Thirsty Koala in Astoria, Queens. Guests were treated to a wide selection of great Aussie fare such as meat pies, sausage rolls, fish and chips and mini pavlovas, as well as Australian wine and beer on a warm spring evening in Astoria.


Spring into April Reception

We celebrated the beginning of spring at with a reception at the 
Australian Consulate General. The recently refurbished Monash room was decorated with beautiful spring blooms donated by The Wild Bunch NYC and guests were entertained with live music by Australian acoustic guitarist and Dame Joan Sutherland Fund recipient, Gabriel Andrews. Guests also enjoyed pies and sausage rolls from The Australian NYC, as well as plentiful hors d'oeuvres and Australian wine and beer. 
   

March Reception

Members and friends braved the cold to join us at our March Reception at Bluestone Lane Collective Café in the West Village. Enjoying some Australian wine and beer with great company in the Aussie beach café-inspired setting helped take minds off the snow falling outside. Guests were also treated to pies and sausage rolls from The Australian NYC, as well as lamingtons, Anzac biscuits and espressos from Bluestone Lane Coffee.

 

Australia Day Black Tie Gala
 

 

23 January 2015 | Cipriani Wall Street, New York

Just over 400 guests attended the 2015 Australia Day Black Tie Gala in the grand ballroom of Cipriani Wall Street, New York.  Special guests at the dinner included the Hon. Julie Bishop, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Ian Thorpe OAM, who was honored on the night for his extraordinary contribution to sport and philanthropy. Guests were entertained by Master of Ceremonies, actor and TV host Nick Hardcastle; Broadway performer Kaye Tuckerman, and opera singer Rachelle Durkin. Many danced the night away with DJ Ricardo Lima spinning Aussie classics through dinner and the after party.

October Reception & Dame Joan Sutherland Fund Artist Showcase

We were excited to feature an arts showcase at our October Reception by past and present recipients of the Association's Dame Joan Sutherland Fund. This was a sold out event at Adelante Studios with over 100 guests in attendance. 24 artists were featured in the showcase which included a visual art exhibition, moving image and art projections, and live performances. Guests enjoy Australian wine and beer, pies and sausage rolls from The Australian, and other treats from The Thirsty Koala.


 

13th Annual Wine Tasting Dinner
 

 

15 September 2014 | Anassa Taverna, New York

The American Australian Association’s Wine Tasting Dinner was held in the private dining room of Anassa Taverna on the Upper East Side, NYC. The evening featured a three-course dinner and wine tasting with Australian and American wines presented by wine experts Anthony Allport of The Fine Wine Agency. Starting with a reception featuring an Australian sparkling wine courtesy of Negociants USA, the evening continued with a side-by-side comparison of ten Australian and American wine over five different varietals. 


   

September Reception 'Living Large in Small NY Space'

Our September reception was hosted by DECOR AID, in the interior design firm’s New York studio. Décor Aid head interior designer, Lauren Cusack and Australian-American senior design consultant Barbara Gates of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams shared their top design tips on making the most out of living in a small New York apartment. Guests enjoyed Australian beer and wine, nibbles and networking whilst taking in inspiration for their own homes.


 

Great Aussie Rooftop BBQ

Close to 100 Aussies and friends joined us on the rooftop at Northern Territory in Brooklyn to celebrate summer with dinner and drinks. Guests enjoyed Northern Territory’s brand new BBQ menu with sausage sizzles and steak sandwiches, while enjoying picture perfect views of Manhattan’s skyline with a drink in hand.



American Australian Association's Telstra Summer Cruise

After two nights of gloomy weather and rain in New York, we were lucky enough to have blue skies for our Telstra Summer Cruise on Wednesday, July 16. Blue skies turned into a beautiful sunset as we sailed along the East and Hudson rivers with views of the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges. Around 300 guests joined us on board the Harbor Lights and enjoyed pies and sausage rolls from The Australian, dancing on mid deck and snapping away at our photo booth. 

 
   

Spotlight On: Fashion Forward Aussies in New York

For our second Spotlight Speaker Series installment, we brought four fashion forward Aussies to the Wythe Hotel to speak about launching their careers in New York. In the spotlight were accessories designer Aimee Kestenberg, photographer Nick Hudson, womens wear designer Benjamin Mach and fashion journalist Hannah Tattersall. The evening was moderated by Julie Anne Quay of V Files and the Australian Fashion Foundation.


Australia Day Black Tie Gala
 

  24 January 2014 | Cipriani Wall Street, New York

The American Australian Association partnered with G’Day USA for the 2014 Gala, presented by National Australia Bank. 620 guests attended the evening, which celebrated Australia Day and Australia in the United States through an evening of Australian food, wine and entertainment. One of Australia’s leading didgeridoo players and composers, William Barton, and singer Paulini were amongst the entertainment. Robert Thomson was honored for his significant contribution to journalism, along with Julie Anne Quay and Malcom Carfrae who are international ambassadors for Australian fashion.
