What is the Australia to USA Fellowship Program?

  • The Association awards Fellowships at the graduate (Masters, PhD or post-doctoral) level of up to US$40,000 each year. Fellowships are available for Australians who will benefit from doing advanced research or study in the fields of business, science, technology, medicine, engineering and sustainable development in the United States. In return, Fellows are expected to contribute to Australia’s intellectual capital as well as the country’s overall social and economic well-being upon their return. We also offer Americans the opportunity for study and research opportunities in Australia.

What is the USA to Australia Fellowship Program?

  • The Association awards Fellowships each year at the graduate (Masters, PhD or post-doctoral) level of up to US$30,000-US$40,000 for US scholars undertaking advanced research or study in Australia. Fellowships are available for Americans who will benefit from doing research or study in the fields of life sciences, medicine, engineering or mining. There is particular interest in the fields of oceanography/marine sciences & stem cell research.

Does the Association help arrange university or institutional affiliations in the US or Australia?

  • No. Applicants must make their own arrangements for university affiliation and have a confirmed placement by the time the Fellowship is awarded.

 

Eligibility

Who is eligible for the Australia to the US Fellowship program?

  • Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia doing research or studying at the graduate level – Masters, PhD or post-doctoral. Applicants may already be in the U.S. at the time of application. Please read the specific eligibility guidelines for each program.

Who is eligible for the US to Australia Fellowship program?

  • Applicants must be US citizens or US permanent residents doing research or study at the graduate level(Masters, PhD, post-doctoral). Applicants may already be in Australia. Please read the specific eligibility guidelines on this program.

My course of study will not include a formal research component. Am I eligible?

  • Study without a defined purpose is less compelling for a fellowship award. Applicants must explain why being in the Australia/ the US is important to their research or study.

Are sabbaticals supported by the Association's awards?

  • As a general rule our award does not support Fellowships in sabbaticals.

Are their minimum/ maximum time restrictions on the duration of the Fellowship?

  • Fellowships must be for a minimum of 3 months, a maximum of 1 year.

When do I have to begin the Fellowship?

  • Selected Fellows have to start the Fellowship within 12 months of the date they sign the acceptance letter.

I'm an Australian citizen but I'm already studying/ living in the US, am I still eligible to apply for the A to US Fellowships?

  • Yes, you need only be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia. The same rule applies to US citizens wanting to apply for US to Australia Fellowships.



Budget & Finances

What items can be included in the budget?

  • Generally the Fellowship supports the fellows travel, living and studying expenses. Please see application instructions and guidelines for further information on allowable/non-allowable expenses.

Can I accept other grants or awards in addition to the American Australian Association Fellowship?

  • You may accept additional grants to satisfy your budget needs as described in the application form. However, you must detail the type of grant(s) and amount(s). The Association reserves the right to decline an application if the corresponding budget cannot be justified.

Am I responsible for any taxes incurred as a result of being selected as a Fellow?

  • Yes. Fellows are responsible for any and all taxes incurred. We strongly advise you to seek your own independent taxation counsel.

Can the Fellowship be used to pay for family/dependent travel?

  • No, the Fellowship is to assist the fellow themselves and not their dependents.

If awarded, when must I begin my fellowship?

  • We generally require fellows to begin their fellowships within 12 months of their acceptance letter.

 

Application Submission

What is the deadline for Fellowship applications?

  • Complete applications must be received by April 30th for the Australia to US Fellowship. Applications for the US to Australia Fellowship program are due October 15th.

How do I submit my application?

  • Applications must be submitted online.

How will I know when my application has been received?

  • We will generally confirm receipt of your application within 24-48 hours.  

When will successful applicants be notified for the Australia to US Fellowship Program?

  • A select group of applicants will be contacted to interview with the judges at the Association’s expense in Australia in June or July and successful applicants will be notified soon thereafter.

When will successful applicants be notified for the US to Australia Fellowship Program?

  • A select group of applicants will be contacted to interview with the judges at the Association's expense in late November and successful applicants will be notified around December each year.

 

Visa

Does the American Australian Association arrange my immigration visa?

  • No, it is the responsibility of the applicant to obtain the necessary immigration visa. In most cases either the students' home university or their destination university will assist with these arrangements.
