Anzac Day in Boston 2014

For the first time, this year's Anzac Day event attracted such large numbers, that the service was moved out of the Appleton Chapel into the main Memorial Church at Harvard University. Since 2011, this event has been generously sponsored by the Harvard University Committee on Australian Studies.

Royal Australian Navy Commander John Stavridis' address was about the Anzac Spirit and how it encompasses characteristics such as discipline, courage and valour. He gave an example of when the Anzac Spirit had been demonstrated by Thomas Pope, not an Anzac, but a Corporal of the US Army. It seemed fitting therefore that young ROTC cadets from local colleges had provided a Color Guard to open the service.

The service included readings by American Australian Association Fellow, Heather Kember, Chair of Kia Ora New England, Danielle McLaughlin and New Zealand Honorary Consul General to New England Simon Leeming; and was led by Father Jeremy Clarke, an Australian Jesuit priest from Boston College.

Tom Burtenshaw and Trevor Ryan, both 11 years old, assisted with collections, which benefit the Australian Legacy and the New Zealand Returned Services Association, and ensure continuation of ANZAC Day commemorations in New England.

A lively reception followed, where many guests, including Louise Stavridis, Alex and Jessica Lancaster, Jinyu Rogers and Anne Burtenshaw, had brought plates to share. Andrew Jeffery and Danielle McLaughlin/Nixon Peabody sponsored the popular meat pies, sausage rolls and lamingtons from KO Catering and Pies. Drinks were generously provided by the Boston Demons.

Many guests expressed anticipation for next year's Anzac Day commemorations, which will mark the 100th year anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign.
