Introducing our new CA Committee Chairman

Julie, Lady Hardinge (pictured above with Paul Hopper) has officially taken the reigns as our California Committee Chairman, succeeding Paul Hopper who has returned to Australia. Julie brings enthusiasm, energy and a wealth of experience in working within expat communities across the globe. Julie was born in Sydney, and grew up in South Africa, India and Hong Kong. After being educated in Sydney, Julie then moved overseas and lived in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Montreal, London, Paris, New York, Connecticut and now Los Angeles.
In each of the cities she has resided in, Julie has been active in the various Australian societies and associations as well as the local communities. A huge advocate and supporter for Australia and Australian arts, business, education, tourism, wine, cuisine, culture, sports, and our entrepreneurial and innovative spirit, Julie is excited to work with her fellow Australian residents in California showcasing the best of what Australia has to offer and involving and including our American hosts in our extensive Australian community and businesses.

Doug Wisor Wine Scholarship Recipient 2015

The Doug Wisor Wine Scholarship honours Doug Wisor, the brilliant young American-born winemaker at Craggy Range Winery who passed away in New Zealand following a tragic kite surfing accident. Administered by the American Australian Association, the scholarship supports a young American winemaker to travel to New Zealand and intern at Craggy Range Winery for a vintage.

An ambitious, passionate and motivated individual, James Jelks (pictured above), was the recipient of the 2015 scholarship and recently completed his internship. He said it was as an exceptional opportunity to work with a range of cool and warm climate varieties. He particularly appreciated the trust that Chief Winemaker Matt Stafford put in his intern team which enabled them to learn quickly and improve their skills, particularly in winery operations.

James made friends with a group of international interns who all shared a strong interest in wine. He also thoroughly enjoyed his two-week excursion post vintage visiting top New Zealand winemakers and estates (largely within but not limited to those in ‘The Family of Twelve’) and extends his gratitude to those who hosted him during the tour. James said he was treated with a professional level of respect not normally received at the intern level, and he feels lucky to have tasted alongside, and learned from, those who are defining New Zealand’s regions and wines.

Applications for the 2016 scholarship will open later this year. Please contact Lucy Harel to express your interest, or stay tuned for further details.
