On February 18, 2016, the celebrated Australian Chamber Orchestra presents The Reef, an extraordinary celebration of Australian surf, wildlife and music, at 92nd Street Y. Escape wintery New York for a couple of hours and be transported to the sun-drenched Ningaloo Reef, surrounded by the wonderful music of the ACO.
The Reef is Richard’s inspired creation, a mesmerising multi-media production combining stunning film with exhilarating live music. Shot on Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef - where the desert meets the ocean – the film features footage of the ocean, the surfers who ride it, the wildlife who inhabit it and the desert landscape beyond. It is an illuminating and thrilling celebration of surfing, the ocean and the fragile landscape through film and music.
For this very special New York premiere, the Australian Chamber Orchestra will perform live on stage with a score ranging from Rachmaninov and Beethoven to Pete Seeger and Alice in Chains. With Indigenous players, rock musicians and folk singers in the mix, it will be truly unforgettable experience.
“Mick Sowry and Jon Frank capture transcendent images of the water in all its purity, of the barrels as waves break (seen in slow motion from the surfer's and the fish's perspective), of the surging force of nature and of the whale sharks and manta rays that call this beautiful place home...The surfing shots on finless surfboards conveyed dreamlike magic and exhilaration in fast and slow motion.” Sydney Morning Herald
Under Richard Tognetti’s leadership, the ACO has earned a reputation as one of the leading chamber orchestras in the world. The London Times has gone so far as to say “This group must be the best chamber orchestra on earth.”
Enjoy priority seating and join Richard Tognetti, the musicians and creative team at an exclusive event after the concert, hosted by Australian Consul General in New York, Nick Minchin. Information on Premium Packages can be found here.
