About Us

HISTORY

Founded in 1948, the American Australian Association is the largest non-profit organization in the United States devoted to relations between the United States and Australia and New Zealand.

For over 55 years, it has provided an important forum for political and business leaders of the United States and Australia and New Zealand. The Association was founded with the intent of assisting and facilitating the establishment of a closer relationship between Australia and the United States in the post-World War II era.

The Association operates throughout the tri-State area and in New England and California. It is also affiliated with the American Australian Association, Ltd., based in Sydney. Funding for the Association is through memberships and annual fundraising events. The Association is a Section 501(c)(3) public charity, contributions to which are tax-deductible to the extent provided under Section 170 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.

2008 marks the 60th Anniversary of the American Australian Association, and to mark the Anniversary, the Association is holding several special gala events to celebrate its history.

Check events on this website

The achievements of the Association are largely due to the involvement of its Patrons, Officers, Board and Committee members and a large team of volunteers and dedicated staff. We applaud all those companies and individuals that support the Association.

Social

In furtherance of its goal of promoting relations between the United States and these two countries, the American Australian Association conducts vibrant and extensive social programs. The monthly social reception is an excellent opportunity for networking with the American Australian community in New York. This is generally held on the first Thursday of the month at the Australian Consulate in midtown Manhattan. The highlight of the Associations social year is the Annual Australia Day Black Tie Gala held in late January. This is a black tie affair at a premier venue in New York. Valuable prizes are auctioned or raffled to raise funds for charitable and philanthropic programs of the Association. Other events on the social calendar include our wine tastings, The Annual Corporate Golf Tournament, The Martini Party and The Melbourne Cup Evening with a live feed of the famous horse race in Australia. Recently, we celebrated the formation of the American Australian Association...

History of the Association

Following the end of World War II, Sir Keith Murdoch was concerned that the ties developed between Australia and the United States remain strong. He believed that the establishment of a strong American Australian Association to foster American governmental and business interest in Australia should be established. Together with senior influential American businessmen, particularly Sir Randal Heymanson of Australian Newspapers Services, the Association was formed and incorporated in 1948 as a non profit group. The inaugural meeting of the Association was held at the University Club, New York on October 7th, 1948. Guest speakers were the Rt. Hon. Robert Gordon Menzies, leader of the Liberal Party in Australia and Sir Keith Murdoch. From left: Wendell Willkie and Sir Keith Murdoch; Dinner for The Rt. Hon. Dr. H.V.
A Fund of the American Australian Association was established in 2003 to assist Australian children needing urgent and specific medical treatment in the USA, which is unavailable to them in Australia. The Fund was established at the behest of individuals who witnessed the life struggle of late Stanley Sclavos, a young Australian boy who was suffering from leukemia and was in need of another bone marrow transplant. His family had come to the United States to enable him to receive medical treatment here. Stanley passed away April 15, 2003 following a 33-month battle with childhood leukemia, specifically, acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The Sclavos family’s Australian medical coverage and government assistance did not cover the massive expenses incurred by Stanley’s treatment in the United States. To cover their medical costs, which were in excess of $500,000, the family sold their house and business, exhausted all of their resources,...

Mission and Future Directions

Mission

The American Australian Association’s purpose is to broaden, strengthen and encourage ties across the Pacific through corporate, educational, economic, social and cultural activities.

Established in 1948 by newspaper publisher Sir Keith Murdoch and a group of like minded Australians and Americans, the Association is the largest public not-for-profit organization devoted to building strategic alliances between the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

The Association’s corporate membership includes many of the most prominent commercial and financial institutions engaged in business between the United States and Australia and New Zealand.

[Corporate Members link]

Future Directions

The Association has been growing since its beginning in 1948, and the Association’s Board of Directors believe there is substantial scope for further expansion. With a new full-time President and professional staff in 1995, and the merger of the Association with the Australia Society in 1996, it was possible to expand programs and activities dramatically. Since that time, the Association has been moving aggressively to enhance its corporate, educational, philanthropic and social programs, to further increase its blue chip corporate membership base (corporate members provide over some 80% of annual revenues to the Association) and to take advantage of new opportunities for service to the American, Australian and New Zealand relationship. The Association is committed to further growth, development and change.

Sarah received her bachelor degree from Brown University and spent recent years as a research fellow at NASA Ames Center for Nanotechnology exploring the fundamental properties of carbon nano-tube and nano-tube derived materials. Sarah has authored a half dozen peer reviewed articles and several nano-material patents. Upon completion of her PhD, Sarah plans to spearhead a movement for nano-enabled solutions into every day life - increasing business and consumer...
