Jane will share her reflections on New Zealand’s television industry including ‘notables’ such as Lucy Lawless, Flight of the Conchords, and our answer to Coro Street: Shortland Street, and stories of our film ‘achievers’ at home and internationally (think Weta Workshops, Peter Jackson etc).

Jane will discuss the challenges facing traditional entertainment and local media in the 21st century’s global village of convergent technology.

As the head of New Zealand’s public broadcasting funding agency Jane Wrightson oversees annual spending in excess of $130 million invested in a wide range of local television, radio, music and new media content. Prior to her current role, Jane was Chief Executive of the Broadcasting Standards Authority, CEO of the Screen Production and Development Association, NZ’s Chief Film Censor, and a wide range of management roles in TVNZ.

Jane is a noted film critic (a great excuse to watch lots of movies and shows), and is a regular speaker at international media and cultural events.

In her spare time, Jane serves as a Director of Swimming New Zealand, and was previously a member of the Board of Netball New Zealand. Jane holds an MBA (with Distinction) and completed her undergraduate studies at Victoria University.

Date: Wednesday, March 31st.
Time: 12pm until 1.30pm.

Australian Consul General, Phillip H. Scanlan, AM, and the American Friends of the National Gallery of Australia, invite you to an illustrated talk by Dr Michael Gunn of the National Gallery of Australia.

Some of the most evocative sacred works of Pacific art were originally collected as “gods” or “heathen idols” when Polynesian peoples were converted to Christianity in the 18th & 19th centuries. These include the powerful & iconic Ku figures from Hawai’i; subtle and delicate female figures carved from whale’s teeth in Tonga; goddesses from Nukuoro.

The Polynesian concept most often translated as ‘gods’ is atua, which refers to various life-forces that Polynesians understand to exist outside a living body. A number of different types of objects were used to represent, contain, or interact with atua. Some said to be ‘gods’ were in fact ancestor figures. Others were found in caves and had been used as containers for disembodied life-forces, some were probably used for sorcery.

The National Gallery of Australia is developing a major exhibition of Polynesian art which will explore the nature of Polynesian gods and their relationship to the iconic works of art which have come to represent Polynesia. Michael Gunn, the curator for this exhibition, will give an illustrated talk about the development of this exciting exhibition

About Tiziana Borghese:

“I am neither painter nor photographer,” Tiziana Borghese explains, “but a hybrid of both.” This state of being characterizes much of the Australian-Italian artist’s enigmatic, formally lush work. Concerned with both the visible world and the subconscious, the dire and the hopeful, she crafts complex and mesmerizing images of unreal spaces that draw us into unknown locales, through dark regions towards brilliant and obliquely familiar brightness. She creates glowing havens for positivism and optimism.

Borghese stages and photographs elaborate settings that often include her own paintings, offering us a glimpse of mysterious and unknowable environments. Typically these spaces are portals and passages, leading the eye deep into mysterious and intriguing terrain. Her images play with textures, reflections, direction and perspective, evoking impossible architecture and terrains where distinctions between interiors and exteriors, depth and surface become an intriguing play of media. Borghese crafts exquisitely detailed psychological landscapes that draw viewers into imaginative new spaces for thought.

The La Brea Tar Pits are one of the world’s most significant and spectacular megafauna fossil sites. The George C Page Museum at La Brea houses the millions of specimens from thousands of extraordinary creatures painstakingly retrieved from the ancient tar.
