The original work of two gifted Australian artists, Nada Herman and Jennifer Pinder, will be on display at Agora Gallery, NYC from February 10 through March 1, 2012. Entrance is free and all art lovers are encouraged to attend, enjoy and meet some of the artists whose works make up this delightful show.

About Nada Herman

Australian artist Nada Herman applies paint to the canvas using an approach both spontaneous and intense, resulting in images that feature brilliant color, lush brushstrokes, and passionate textures. In her uniquely bold style, Herman’s art reflects the beauty that surrounds her. What makes her paintings so compelling is their unpredictability, achieved as paints are applied with a palette knife and sometimes even squeezed straight from the tube as she sculpts the layers of color along the way. One of the driving forces behind her art is Herman’s belief that nothing is static. As she explains, even “a humble flower or piece of fruit has a life force.” Thus, in her landscapes, cityscapes and still lifes, Herman captures all the color and movement contained within, elucidating the essence, spirit, and energy at the heart of her subject so that her paintings come to have a life force of their own.

Taught by her famous artist grandfather Sali Herman and her renowned father Ted, Nada Herman continues the family legacy, living and working in Avalon, Sydney, Australia.

About Jennifer Pinder

Australian artist Jennifer Pinder’s abstract paintings are a study of light and color and how they interact, creating multifaceted experiences that profoundly affect the viewer. Her work is inspired by the deception of simplicity, where the images appear uncomplicated, yet change and transform depending on the viewer’s perspective and point of view. To achieve this effect, she layers colors and patterns in subtle ways, creating inner threads of multidimensional weaves, or alternately paints sculptural spikes that extrude from the canvas, which play off light and color perceptions.

Pinder’s successful career in the Australian fashion industry allowed her to study the complex simplicity of texture, color, and pattern, and how they intersect in ways that are evocative and meaningful. She has also been inspired by the classic designs and precise connecting patterns of the Middle East, where she has made her home. Her masterful use of these elements result in pieces that viewers “have to work at . . . [where] they can come up close and see one aspect, then move away and see something completely different.”

Reelabilities is the largest festival in the country dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories and artistic expressions of people with different disabilities. Initiated in New York in 2007, the festival presents award winning films by and about people with disabilities.

Anything You Can Doby Australian writer and director Emma Buckley will form part of the selection of award-winning films to be screened at the 2012 Reelabilities NY Disabilities Film Festival. The film deals with the themes of disability, fair play, opportunities and support as it follows the story of two young boys who find themselves facing off out of boredom at an old aunty's house. The competition is fierce as both parties try to outdo the other. However, as the rivalry escalates it becomes clear the contest needs to continue beyond the confines of their room but for one of the competitors this presents a problem: how can they get down the outside stairs in their wheelchair? Do they unfairly face defeat without even being able to leave the building?

One of Australia’s most innovative and acclaimed theatre companies is travelling to New York’s New Victory Theater this April. Belvoir will perform The Book of Everything by Guus Kuijer in a space that is known to be one of the most prestigious venues for children’s work in the world.

The performance takes audience members on a journey with nine-year-old Tomas Klopper. Thomas has one simple but important wish, When I grow up, I’m going to be happy. On his journey he sees extraordinary things that most people ignore: plagues of hopping frogs, summer hailstorms and rivers bursting with tropical fish. The story tells us about a child who learns to act when beset by fear and faced by wrong as Tom grapples with issues such as religious views and domestic violence.

The piece is suitable for 9 year olds to 99 year olds and is proudly supported by the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.
