This BYO event is designed for all ages. Pack your own picnic, blankets and sunscreen and bring the family along to watch a great game of cricket. Although there are some extra refreshments supplied by sponsors, there are limited shops in the area, so make sure you bring a hamper for lunch, drinks and anything you need for the day. For those with families, we're planning a kids' cricket game and there are also tennis courts (bring your own gear -- local residents have preference), a small kids play area and great spectator viewing.

After spending a yearlong working vacation on a coffee farm in Brazil, Toby Smith returned to Australia in 1998 and started roasting beans in his mother’s garage in the Sydney suburb of Woolloomooloo. Passionate about sharing his knowledge of coffee, Smith began hosting public coffee cuppings and training in his mother’s garden. Toby’s Estate continues this tradition in its Australian locations and now also in Brooklyn.

Toby’s Estate in Brooklyn cups for green bean purchasing, quality control, and to educate its staff about the coffees served in house. Aiming to educate and inspire, Toby’s Estate in Brooklyn is now offering public coffee cupping classes in their custom designed cupping room and espresso lab – a glass walled space at the back of the 3000 square foot roaster and cafe. The cuppings are open to coffee enthusiasts of all levels, from coffee nerds to people wanting to start learning about coffee. Toby’s head trainer or roaster will guide participants through the full sensory evaluation process, starting from the smelling of dry fragrances and wet aroma to the tasting of the coffee.

JOSEPH V. MELILLO

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Executive Producer

Joseph V. Melillo, executive producer since 1999, is responsible for the artistic direction of the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). In the years that he has held this role, BAM has enjoyed increases in both programming and audience attendance in its Harvey Lichtenstein Theater, Howard Gilman Opera House, Rose Cinemas, and BAMcafé. Prior to his current position, Melillo served as BAM’s producing director, following a six‐year tenure as founding director of the Next Wave Festival.

Over the years, Melillo has fostered the work of emerging and established artists and forged dynamic artistic partnerships. One such partnership is The Bridge Project—a three‐year series of international theater engagements featuring a trans‐Atlantic company of actors directed by Sam Mendes and produced by BAM, The Old Vic (under the artistic direction of Kevin Spacey), and Neal Street (headed by Mendes and partner Caro Newling). The Bridge Project has furthered the global reach of BAM’s mission, with engagements in the US, the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, The Netherlands, Spain, France, and Germany. BAM will soon expand its campus with the addition of the Richard B. Fisher Building, featuring an intimate and flexible new performance space, and adding a third stage for BAM’s

renowned Next Wave Festival.

Joseph Melillo was named a Chevalier (1999) and an Officier (2004) de L’ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France. Also in 2004, he was awarded an honorary OBE for his outstanding commitment to British performing arts in America. In 2007, Melillo was appointed Knight of the Royal Order of the Polar Star, in recognition of his role in solidifying ties between the performing arts communities of Sweden and the United States. Most recently, Melillo was named the Cultural Ambassador for Taiwan.

Melillo has served on the faculty of the Brooklyn College Graduate Program in Arts Management and on the boards of directors for the Association of Performing Arts Presenters and En Garde Arts. He was a panelist for the National Endowment of the Arts Dance Program and the New York State Council on the Arts, and served as Multidisciplinary Panel Chair of the Pew Fellowships in the Arts’ 2003 and 2007 Awards. Melillo is a lecturer at colleges and universities nationally and internationally. He currently serves as a member of the International Arts Advisory Committee for the Wexner Prize (Wexner Center for the Arts). Melillo earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and theater at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut and a Masters of Fine Arts in speech and drama at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. He is currently celebrating his 28th year at BAM.

BAM was selected through an open grant competition to implement season two of DanceMotion USA. DanceMotion USA sends contemporary American dance companies to 14 countries and territories in the Asia Pacific, Middle East, South Central Asia regions and Africa (starting January 2012).

Australian media personality Derryn Hinch has spent the past 50 years in the media spotlight - print, radio and TV. He has authored over 10 books - his newest 'Human Headlines: My 50 Years in the Media' has just been released. Derryn's career which has seen both high and low points over the years has spanned momentous events and people in living memory. He has a unique, opinionated and often controversial view of history.

In 2010 Derryn was diagnosed with liver cancer and given 12 months to live. In June 2011, he received a life saving liver transplant. Two weeks later he was placed under house arrest for breaching supression orders and naming two child sex offenders at a public rally.

This is his story...

Dear Australian Lawyer,

The International Law Section of the Law Council of Australia has formed a NY Chapter for Australian lawyers. (See attached excerpt from the International Law Section’s March 2012 Newsletter.) The general objectives of the NY Chapter are to apprise the Law Council of practice issues of concern to Australian lawyers working in the U.S., to assist in the development and implementation of the Law Council’s international strategy, to provide the Law Council with access to local expertise on U.S. legal issues, and to co-ordinate Law Council delegations to the U.S.

I am writing to invite you to join the Law Council’s International Law Section and become involved in the NY Chapter. Membership in the Section and NY Chapter is free through June 30, 2012, and very reasonably priced at AU$65.00 a year thereafter. If you are interested, please complete the attached membership application form, and return it to me or directly to the Law Council at ils@lawcouncil.asn.au.

I would also like to invite you to join the NY Chapter’s executive committee, which will meet for the first time on Wednesday, April 18th at 6:30 p.m. at the offices of McLaughlin & Stern LLP, 260 Madison Avenue (between 38th and 39th Streets). To date, over 100 Fellows have received awards totaling over US$3 million to pursue studies in critical fields - from key medical research to sustainability - at top institutions such as MIT, Harvard and Princeton.

ANZAC DAY SERVICES 2012

ANZAC Day is when we pause to remember those Australians and New Zealanders killed in war, to honour returned servicemen and women and to pay tribute to those personnel who are currently serving their countries. Although its timing recalls the landing at Gallipoli of the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps on 25 April 1915, the Commemorative Service is for all those who have given their lives during conflict.

In 2012 we will be holding two ANZAC Day Commemorative Services in New York. The first will be a Dawn Service, held at 6.00 am on Wednesday 25th April at the East Coast Memorial in Battery Park. The Service will be held rain or shine - we encourage you to come prepared with warm clothing & an umbrella in case of inclement weather.

The traditional Sunday Service will be held on Sunday 29th April commencing at 9.30am at the ANZAC Memorial Garden on the roof of the Rockefeller Center, 620 Fifth Avenue, New York. The entrance to the Garden is on the south side of West 50th Street.
In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held in the room adjacent to the Garden. Both Services will be co-hosted by the Australian and New Zealand Consuls General.

Entry to the Sunday Service: Please carry photo identification (for example US ID card, driver’s license or passport). Bags may be searched before being granted access to the Garden.
Numbers will be very restricted for the Sunday Service; therefore people are encouraged to arrive early to be given entry.

Immediately following the Sunday Service, guests are invited to join us for morning tea at the Rockefeller Center.

Due to the nature of the Service, respectful attire is requested.

2008-09 Budget Delivers Competitive Tax Edge for Managed Funds

Treasurer Wayne Swan has announced in the 2008-09 Budget the Australian government’s commitment to improving the international competitiveness of the Australian managed funds industry by reducing the level of withholding tax to distributions of Australian source net income (other than dividends, interests and royalties) for foreign residents. Under the new announcement, withholding tax for foreign residents will be reduced from a non-final rate of 30 per cent to a final withholding tax rate of: - 22.5 per cent of fund payments for the first income year; - 15 per cent final withholding tax for fund payments for the second income year; and - 7.5 per cent final withholding tax for the third and later income years. It will cover distributions made directly from MITs to foreign residents as well as distributions made through other intermediaries (including custodians). Review of Export Policies and Programs: Call for submissions The Australian Minister for Trade, Mr. Crean, announced initiation of this comprehensive review on 21 February. It is being chaired by David Mortimer AO, with the assistance of Dr. John Edwards. The Minister has asked for the Review report by 31 August 2008. The American Australian Association launched its Education Fund in 2002 and is currently funded largely through monies raised at our Annual Benefit Dinners and through key direct corporate sponsorships. The Education Fund was established to support post-graduate study and research between Australia and the United States and is the largest source of privately funded educational Fellowships between the two countries. The American Australian Association awards fellowships of up to US$30,000 each year to Australians and Americans for advanced research and study in the United States and Australia respectively. The Fellowships build on existing strong social and economic partnerships and foster intellectual exchange between the United States and Australia.
