Dr Michael Fullilove is the Director of the Global Issues Program at the Lowy Institute for International Policy and a Nonresident Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC.

Previously, Michael worked as a lawyer and was an adviser to Prime Minister Paul Keating. He wrote the initial feasibility study for the Lowy Institute in 2002 and acted as a consultant to Frank Lowy AC during its establishment. Michael graduated in international relations and law from the Universities of Sydney and New South Wales, with dual university medals. He also studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, where he took a master's degree in international relations and wrote his doctorate on Franklin D. Roosevelt's foreign policy.

About the Hazel Rowley Memorial Lecture: The Hazel Rowley Memorial Lecture is dedicated to the memory of author and biographer Hazel Joan Rowley (1951-2011). Born in London, she was raised and educated in Australia, where she later taught at Deakin University. She was well-known for her biographies on Christina Stead, Richard Wright and Simone de Beauvoir and Jean Paul Sartre. Her last biography, Franklin and Eleanor: An Extraordinary Marriage, a ground breaking account of the Roosevelts' relationship, garnered much praise from critics and was named one of the 10 best books for 2010 by NPR's Fresh Air.

Australian artist Nada Herman applies paint to the canvas using an approach both spontaneous and intense, resulting in images that feature brilliant color, lush brushstrokes, and passionate textures. In her uniquely bold style, Herman’s art reflects the beauty that surrounds her. What makes her paintings so compelling is their unpredictability, achieved as paints are applied with a palette knife and sometimes even squeezed straight from the tube as she sculpts the layers of color along the way. One of the driving forces behind her art is Herman’s belief that nothing is static. As she explains, even “a humble flower or piece of fruit has a life force.” Thus, in her landscapes, cityscapes and still lifes, Herman captures all the color and movement contained within, elucidating the essence, spirit, and energy at the heart of her subject so that her paintings come to have a life force of their own.

About Jennifer Pinder

Australian artist Jennifer Pinder’s abstract paintings are a study of light and color and how they interact, creating multifaceted experiences that profoundly affect the viewer. Her work is inspired by the deception of simplicity, where the images appear uncomplicated, yet change and transform depending on the viewer’s perspective and point of view. To achieve this effect, she layers colors and patterns in subtle ways, creating inner threads of multidimensional weaves, or alternately paints sculptural spikes that extrude from the canvas, which play off light and color perceptions.

Pinder’s successful career in the Australian fashion industry allowed her to study the complex simplicity of texture, color, and pattern, and how they intersect in ways that are evocative and meaningful. She has also been inspired by the classic designs and precise connecting patterns of the Middle East, where she has made her home. Her masterful use of these elements result in pieces that viewers “have to work at . . . [where] they can come up close and see one aspect, then move away and see something completely different.”

On behalf of the Board and Staff of the American Australian Association we thank you for your ongoing support during the year and would like to wish you and your loved ones very Happy Holidays.

As 2011 draws to a close on what has been another very successful year for the Association, I would like to reflect on some of the year’s many highlights. The Association commenced the year with our annual Australia Day Black Tie Gala at Cipriani Wall Street held in conjunction with G’Day USA. Long time Association Patron and U.S. – Australian business leader Anthony Pratt, Chairman, Pratt Industries was honored.

Shortly thereafter the Association hosted a high profile welcome dinner for Australian Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard MP at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York on her inaugural visit to the United States. Other notable highlights in the corporate program included Reserve Bank Governor Glenn Steven’s address at our Annual Spring Lecture Lunch in April. A new event, the Summer Arts Soiree at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn was added to the Social calendar. The Association continues its regular monthly receptions and Melbourne Cup, as well as the Corporate Golf Day and Finance & Investment series.

The year drew to a close with our Annual Benefit Dinner on November 9th, honoring Jeff Immelt, CEO and Chairman, GE and James Gorman, President & CEO, Morgan Stanley. The Dinner raised $2 million in funds for the Association and the Education Fund and saw the announcement of an additional five new Education Fellowships, expanding the number of Fellowships offered each year by the Association to thirty. California and Boston continue to expand their membership base and are adding new program activities to their event calendars.

The Association is busy planning ahead and looking forward to further growth in 2012 and we are excited to offer the following event programs early in the New Year.

Education Program

The Education Fund has had a very successful year – awarding 16 Aus to US and 6 US to Aus Fellowships and increasing the Fellowship award to US$30,000. Since the Fund’s launch, the number of applications received each year by the Association has steadily increased, along with the quality of applicants. The high level of scholastic talent and capability is evident in all of the Fellows appointed in fields ranging from medicine to sustainability.

Six new Fellowships will be offered next year extending our Fellowship to wider scope of applicants on both sides of the Pacific.

Social and Cultural

The fall season brought forth many events from our Social & Cultural calendar, as well as some new favorites. From a laugh-out-loud trivia night to an elegant wine tasting dinner, the Association featured an assortment of event programming that was enjoyed by many members and friends alike. Highlights:

10th Annual Wine Tasting Dinner at SHO Shaun Hergatt

Guests gathered in the Financial District for a lesson in Signature Blends from the Wine Angel. Michele Anderson, Master of Wine was the host. The menu included American and Australian samplings of Semillon Blanc, Rose, Meritage & Shiraz Cabernet. The eight featured blends were paired with a delicious three-course dinner crafted by Chef Hergatt.

Halloween & Horses: The Haunted Melbourne Cup
“Fancy dress” had multiple meanings at our annual broadcast of the Melbourne Cup where spooky costumes and fashions on the field came together at the Upper West Side restaurant bar, The Sunburnt Calf, for the ultimate American/Australian celebration.

Sunday Spotlight Series: No One is an Island
With the leadership of Cultural Committee chair, Brendan Moffitt, the new series launched with an artists’ panel moderated by the Association’s Cultural Committee Visual Art Advisor, Claire Bridge, at Chandelier Creative agency’s penthouse in SoHo. Each of the four featured panelists discussed their point of view as an artist and how their perspectives have been shaped with time and travel.

2011 California Business Awards Lunch

The American
Australian Association held their California Business Awards Luncheon honoring Stella Travel Services USA (AUS) and Orion Health (NZ) in The Grand Ballroom at Shutters on the Beach, Santa Monica.

Initiated in 2003, the American Australian Association Business Awards pay tribute to outstanding organizations whose achievements and contributions enhance corporate ties between Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

Previous honorees include: Westfield Corporation, Warner Bros, Fox Entertainment Group, Fosters Wine Estates, Fisher & Paykel Appliances, Macquarie Group, Resmed, Hamilton Jet and Les Mills International.

The Awards Luncheon was attended by 100 members of the Australian, New Zealand and American Business Community in Los Angeles, corporate and government representatives including the Australian and New Zealand Consuls-General.

New Zealand Wine Tasting and Fundraiser
The New Zealand Consul-General, Los Angeles hosted over 150 wine enthusiasts at his residence in Brentwood in November. Guests sampled 30 New Zealand wines and a menu featuring fresh New Zealand produce including cheese, mussels, New Zealand lamb and kiwi fruit while raising money for the Doug Wisor Memorial scholarship that sends an American wine-maker to New Zealand to learn the art of wine-making. Thanks to The Food Lawyers, The New Zealand Consulate General and New Zealand Trade and Enterprize for their generous support.

Melbourne Cup, Halloween and Horses Halloween Party, Los Angeles

This 501 ( c ) 3 Foundation supports educational gift giving in the USA for alumni and friends of the University of Sydney. It has collected donations totalling over $2 million for educational support since it's inception in the early 1990's.

The Foundation is looking for a person who can spend 1 or 2 days a week helping the Secretary/Treasurer (Matt Hall) and the Chairman (David Anstice) with tasks including administering the annual solicitation campaign, sending out donation receipts, liaising with the Development Office at the University, support required for donors, filing of an annual tax return, the Foundation accounts, a brokerage account for donations involving stocks and securities, etc.. There is no Foundation office and working from home or an existing office will thus be necessary. Geographic location is likely not an issue.

2008-09 Budget Delivers Competitive Tax Edge for Managed Funds

Treasurer Wayne Swan has announced in the 2008-09 Budget the Australian government’s commitment to improving the international competitiveness of the Australian managed funds industry by reducing the level of withholding tax to distributions of Australian source net income (other than dividends, interests and royalties) for foreign residents. Under the new announcement, withholding tax for foreign residents will be reduced from a non-final rate of 30 per cent to a final withholding tax rate of: - 22.5 per cent of fund payments for the first income year; - 15 per cent final withholding tax for fund payments for the second income year; and - 7.5 per cent final withholding tax for the third and later income years.
