This is one of the newer corporate initiatives of the Association’s Business Council, and is designed to bring together and share the experiences of the large network of successful Australian and New Zealand women living and working in New York.

Diversity and Leadership, Missteps and Leaps Forward

American International Group, Inc. (AIG) Financial Women’s Initiative sponsored a panel discussion in conjunction with the American Australian Association and the Australian Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency titled Missteps and Leaps Forward: Experiences from the US and Australia in New York City on April 8, 2008.
Steven J. Bensinger, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, AIG hosted the event. In his opening remarks Steven welcomed guests which included visiting business women from Australia. He also noted AIG’s international history and success today as a world leader in insurance and financial services with operations in more than 130 countries and jurisdictions.
The forum was moderated by Paulette Mullings Bradnock, Director of Internal Audit, AIG. The panelists included Nareen Young, CEO, Diversity Council Australia; Beth Brooke, Global Vice Chair of Strategy and Regulatory Affairs, Ernst & Young; Westina Matthews Shatteen, Managing Director, Community Business Development, Merrill Lynch; and Katy McDonald, Head of Employee Relations, Diversity & Policy, Westpac Banking Corporation.
Panelists Westina Matthews Shatteen and Beth Brooke underscored the importance of managing one's career and keeping personal strengths in mind while searching for career opportunities. Other topics included learning how to lead different generations in the workforce and the impact of flexible work practices on employees in the United States and Australia. Many participants commented on the value of candid dialogue in generating and exchanging ideas between leading financial and professional services organizations.
