NY Studio Gallery is pleased to present The Condition: works by Zev Jonas. Jonas’ compositions explore a quiet sense of solitude, often layered with impressions of meditative observance and loneliness. His work seeks out the tension between isolation and connection by contemplating the relationship humans have with our surroundings, how we view and interact with other animals and our environment. While training his lens on a wide range of natural and synthetic environments, Jonas finds beauty in the unexpected. 

“The Condition” investigates both the sensuality and sadness of seclusion while searching for a sense of purpose and place that can be either disturbing and antagonistic, or peaceful and intimate, and at times both. Jonas presents the tranquility in separation and detachment, as well as the inherent sense of displacement, depression and isolation found in artificial environments. Jonas writes, “My photographs illuminate common yet alien settings as lonely, contemplative environments that are enclosed, melancholy, at times tender and often unsettling.”

About Zev Jonas

Born and raised in Australia, Zev Jonas started photographing as a way to convey his isolation while traveling to articulate his overwhelming sense of loneliness. Having never formally studied art, he attempts to simplify the process. Jonas shoots 35mm film and transparencies, then scans and prints the images with minimal alteration. Since settling in New York, he has participated in on-going projects, collaborations and exhibitions across the US, including contributing to Kahn & Selesnick's 'Eisberfreistadt', working with Shearwater on their latest Matador release and curating an exhibition highlighting the work of six emerging photographers at MH Art in Chelsea, New York.
