Australian Women Making it in New York
Guest Speaker: Gabrielle Fitzgerald
Freelance New York Radio Correspondent
10.30am, Wednesday October 10th at the Australian Consulate
Thank you to everyone who attended our September 12th speaker series morning featuring a talk by Allison Jurjens. Twenty two ladies attended Allison's fascinating talk which certainly gave us a unique insight into human nature. Thank you again Allison for sharing you wisdom and knowledge with us.
This month, AWNY welcomes journalist Gabrielle Fitzgerald. As a writer, blogger and ABC radio correspondent, focusing on all things New York, Gabrielle certainly has a story or two to share! Please join us for an entertaining morning.
A social anthropologist by birth, Gabrielle Fitzgerald has 50 years of experience travelling the world researching, reporting and relishing the opportunity to do more.
Gabrielle is based in midtown between Madison and Park Avenue with a direct view to the Chrysler Building. From here she scours the city for stories to share with her diverse audience on ABC Radio and at her blog The Fitzy Report.
There is a never ending supply of anecdotes, from chatting with Helen Clarke on Earth Day at the UN, to joining a conversation with Oliver Stone and Tariq Ali about the history of America, to exchanging comments with Princess Mary about the future of the Australian Republic, or covering the NY hurricane, St Patrick’s Day and Occupy Wall Street. While New York is the regular focus, Gabrielle has also broadcast from an Amish farm in Pennsylvania, an uninhabited island in the middle of the Norwegian Sea, atop a volcano in Hawaii, on the roof of the biggest construction site in the world (Las Vegas, of course) and after the call to prayer in the old city in Istanbul. It just depends on where the story is...
In addition to the ABC, Gabrielle produces high end advertising campaigns and, increasingly, documentary and film projects in the company she built with her photographer/film maker husband. To maintain the pace, Gabrielle swims most mornings at the Y, cycles to the farmer's markets in Union Square and keeps a bottle of champagne in the fridge at all times. You can read more about Gabrielle's adventures on her blog www.thefitzyreport.com.
