Guest Speaker: Lorna Calder Johnson, Financial Services Executive
10:30am, Wednesday July 11th at the Australian Consulate
Thank you to everyone who attended our June speaker series morning featuring award winning author Anna Funder. We had a lovely group of 34 ladies in attendance who all seemed equally touched by Anna's warm and generous talk about her writing and career. We were certainly privileged to have had her speak to us during what appears to be a very busy and in demand period of her life. Anna's book All That I Am won Australian book of the year three weeks ago, and now - just a week after speaking to us - she has won Australia's most prestigious literary prize, the Miles Franklin Award. Congratulations Anna!
For something totally different, next month it's time to get our finances organized! On July 11, financial wiz Lorna Johnson is going to lead us through a mini workshop focusing on how to budget, save and invest - and lets face it, in a town like New York these are helpful things to know!
Lorna Calder Johnson’s career in the Financial Services Industry in Australia (AXA, St. George Bank and NAB) provided her with the opportunity to observe first hand how her customers were managing their money, who they asked for advice, who they trusted, and how they thought through investing for their futures.
Having relocated to the U.S. last year, through her own personal research to understand how to budget, save, and secure her finances in America, she has found lots of information in some areas such as budgeting, but a gap, particularly in the area of “now that I am saving, what do I do with this money?”
Money is Good: An Introduction to Managing Your Family's P&L
In this informal workshop based on the fictional couple of “Bruce and Sheila,” Lorna will cover some questions and a framework for getting control and planning your family’s finances, including:
The big differences between America and Australia
Why do I need to spend time writing down my “Family-As-A-Business” Goals, Strategies and Roadmap?
What is a Family P&L and why is it important?
Now that I am saving, what is investment? What sort of investment options are there, how do I decide? Who to ask? What to ask?
