Lord Howe Island received World Heritage in 1982 for its outstanding flora and fauna. Since then there have been many environmental projects that have put the Island in the lead with island conservation best practice.
Island naturalist Ian Hutton is the authority on the flora and fauna of Lord Howe Island. He is passionate about the environment and is involved in a range of science, conservation and ecotourism projects on Lord Howe Island. His research has covered diverse areas including seabirds, rare plant surveys, endangered snail surveys and climate change monitoring. In 1995 Ian set up bush regeneration ecotours where people pay to visit the Island and assist with weed eradication. In 2002 he was winner of the Jaguar Award for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism and in 2006 Ian was honored with an Order of Australia Medal for services to conservation and tourism.
Also an accomplished photographer Ian uses his photographs of the Island in lectures at the Island Museum and other venues. Ian has produced ten books on Lord Howe Island and at our lecture Ian will be launching his latest book which details the World Heritage values of Lord Howe Island in 264 pages of stunning colour montages.
