Event Description

AUSTRALIAN COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS COME UP FROM
DOWN UNDER TO SHOW OFF THEIR MUSIC

 “BELOW THE STAR-STRETCHED SKY.”

September 28, 2008, 8:30 p.m.

Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, NYC

“Below the Star-Stretched Sky” features the noted Australian Jazz/New Music group, the Silo String Quartet, along with world-renowned British trombonist, Barrie Webb, with whom they have collaborated on many concerts previously. The stretch between the mellow low sound of the trombone and the high range of the strings is caught in the image of the Australian sky represented in the work by composer Eve Duncan, after which the concert was named.

Duncan is part of a vibrant community of composers from Melbourne and is the director of the Melbourne Composers League, a not-for-profit organization. With the help of producer Anna Monea, who also produces the Bayside Film Festival, Duncan is taking her group on the road to show the world what is going on Down Under in the world of new music. Their tour includes concerts in New York (2008) and London (2009).

Eve Duncan and several of the other seven composers whose works will be included will be coming to New York City along with the musicians. Included in this group are four Korean composers who represent the other end of the Pacific Rim and another aesthetic stretching the range of music to be presented at Weill.
