Event Description

It’s rare that we get a chance to see a film that takes us through those horribly destructive years and leaves us feeling good. Yours is a particularly life-affirming work, and will bring pleasure to all who are fortunate enough to see it.
- Alan Adelson, Executive Director, The Jewish Heritage Project

The film is wonderful, wonderful from the very beginning, like a fairytale for children....

About Blinky & Me

The untold story of the Australian animator, Yoram Gross, comes to life in this film that follows the artist and his family through his childhood as a Jew in Nazi occupied Poland, to Israel, where he began creating animated art films, and finally to Australia, where he found his fortune and happiness through children’s animated features and the popular film series BLINKY BILL.

As Gross describes his childhood experiences - how he had to hide, his narrow escapes, the loss of family members, the unspeakable cruelties of war, and the bravery of other Jews and Polish Catholics that helped him survive - his indomitable spirit shines through. He is revisiting them for himself, but also to share his history with his grandchildren.

Their presence and perceptive questions make the senseless absurdity of the war even more difficult to imagine. Effective use is made of old photos and archival footage, interspersed with live action shots. Post-war, scenes from some of Gross’s first films provide an insight into his early experiments in Animation with matches, newspaper, and wooden puppets.

All of these visual elements combine to keep the film alive and the viewer engaged, including the soundtrack, which was composed by Yoram’s son, Guy Gross.

Reviewers have called the film thought-provoking and important, an artistic event and a rare occurrence that takes the viewer through the destructive years of WWII, but leaves them uplifted. Yoram Gross is described as an artist of talent and fortitude, a combination which has enabled him to transform his traumatic experiences into an art-form of wonderful stories about what matters most in life. The benefit of hearing these stories is already evident in his children and grandchildren and undoubtedly will have a profound impact on the film’s viewers.
