Dame Joan Sutherland Fund

In 1998 the American Australian Association established the Dame Joan Sutherland Fund for Australian aspiring artists; it was launched at the release of Dame Joan's book in New York A Prima Donna's Progress

The Fund provides small grants - Applicants wishing to solicit funding should outline their educational needs, their program of performances and rehearsals, their career/resume details and their current financial situation then forward the application to camille.cassel@aaanyc.org. Grants from the Fund are reviewed on a quarterly basis by the Association's staff in consultation with the Cultural Committee.

Simon Tedeschi
Pianist

Described by pianist Leslie Howard as one of the finest musicians of his generation worldwide, Simon Tedeschi was named the Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year In 1998 performing Ginastera's Piano Concerto No 1 with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Jun Maerkl at the Melbourne Concert Hall. He was the recipient of a Queen's Trust Overseas Study Award of $10,000, also presented at the Young Performers Awards in Melbourne. Please click here for the full article...

Megan Roodenrys
Visual Artist

Megan Roodenrys is a third generation visual artist. Megan’s mother, Bronwen Mills, has been a professional artist for over 30 years and Bronwen’s mother, Lorraine Holmes, was a talented artist whom was awarded an OAM for her services to art in Australia. Megan was born in Canberra in 1968 and received her Bachelor of Visual Art from the University of South Australia in 1997. Megan has been exhibiting professionally for almost five years now and is tagged by those in the art industry as an artist whose work continues to evolve and excite. Brendan Moffitt
Stage Director

 

Brendan Moffitt is an Australian born, New York based Stage Director. Brendan graduated from NIDA's Graduate Diploma of Dramatic Art - Directing Course in May of 2004, and since that time has worked as both a Stage Director and as an Assistant Stage Director at San Francisco Opera Center (Merola Opera Program, 2005) where he directed the Merola Grand Finale at the War Memorial Opera House. Cabaret Artist

Cabaret Artist Kim Smith has received the American Australian Association's support through the Dame Joan Sutherland Fund in February 2008 to assist in his undertaking a series of lessons and workshops from distinct cabaret instructor and historian Karen Kohler. In addition, Mr. Smith will present a showcase of his work with Ms. Kohler in February of 2008, at New York’s Don’t Tell Mama cabaret theatre. Please click here for the full article...

Melissa Chambers
Actor

Trained as a classical dancer since childhood, Melissa began her actor training with Claire Crowther in Qld at the age of 16. The following year she was named the Comalco Qld Young Playwright of the Year and in 2000 at the age of 18 was accepted to the Victorian College of the Arts School of Drama.

Elizabeth Corkery

Elizabeth Corkery is a 22 year-old printmaker, working primarily in the medium of screen print and currently undertaking the final semester of her honours year at Sydney’s College of Fine Arts. Over the last 2 years of her degrees, Elizabeth's prints have focused on the relation between art and the psychology condition.

Wally Gunn
Composer


Wally Gunn grew up in Ballarat making dodgy Casiotone keyboard “albums” on cassette with his best friend. After high school, he joyfully misspent the nineties in rock bands, writing and co-writing music, recording and releasing albums independently. In 2002, Wally commenced a degree in Composition at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, and completed with Honours in 2006.

Ben Ballarin
Actor

Ben Ballarin started studying theater at the National Theater and St Martin's Theater in Melbourne. After completing the one year Foundation Year program at VCA in Melbourne, he decided to do some traveling as recommended by a number of his acting teachers in order to gain some life experience.
