New York, 22-10-2007 - The American Australian Association (AAA) honored W. James McNerney Jr., Chairman, President, and CEO of The Boeing Company, for his contributions to American-Australian relations at a benefit dinner this evening in New York City. Boeing chief McNerney, 58, oversees the $61.5 billion aerospace company based in Chicago.
Rupert Murdoch AC, patron of the Association and Newscorp chairman, made the presentation on behalf of the Association. “This truly is an honor and I thank the Association for this recognition,” McNerney said.
The Association’s benefit dinner is the primary fundraiser for its Education Fund which has provided USD$1.5 million in Fellowships to over 60 outstanding scholars. This year 15 post graduate scholars will undertake advanced research and study at leading universities in the US and Australia.
This year we have an extraordinary standard of fellows in a variety of critical industries including business, science, international security and network engineering,” Association Chairman Malcolm Binks said.
McNerney says the Association fellowships foster important relationships between Australia and America. “I’d like to recognize and commend the American Australian Association for its efforts to raise money for education - a cause near and dear to me personally and to Boeing,” McNerney said.
“We have a strong commitment to life-long learning at Boeing, and we have as strong a commitment to Australia - a country where Boeing has many great customers, business and government partners, and employees.” Boeing has a long and valued history in Australia.
Qantas became the first international customer for its inaugural passenger jet, the 707, in 1959, and is one of the largest customers for Boeing’s newest jet, the 787, with orders for 45 airplanes. It has invested more than $8 billion and employs almost 4,000 people in activities in Australia.
In addition to Mr. Murdoch guests at Monday evening’s event will include industry leader Andrew Liveris. Andrew is a patron of the Association as well as President, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman of The Dow Chemical Company, a $49 billion global chemical and plastics manufacturer.
