ANZAC Day 2009

On April 26, 2009, with temperatures soaring to a record-breaking 87 degrees, the American Australian Association, New England, with support from KEA New England, hosted an ANZAC Day event at the Emmanuel Church on Newbury Street in Boston.

One of our most popular annual events, ANZAC Day drew more than 70 attendees from the Australian, Kiwi and local communities. The service commenced with the three national anthems: Advance Australia Fair, God Defend New Zealand (sung in Maori and then English) and the Star Spangled Banner; and was officiated by Father Jeremy Clarke SJ, an Australian Jesuit priest, who is presently teaching at Boston College. Rousing renditions of the Last Post and Reveille were performed by bugler Karl Svab.

Paul Stanwix, American Australian Association Education Fellow, and Alex Grant gave readings. Jeremy Marron recited the Ode to Joy. Micheal Davies, Chairman of Endeavour Partners/CEO of Equus NZ Ltd gave the main address.

An informal and lively reception followed the service, affording the opportunity to socialize and connect with others in the community. Refreshments were generously organized by Charlie Grant and Andrew Jeffery from the American Australian Association New England committee and Damien Helem from the Boston Demons.

Special thanks to Kirsten Chambers, American Australian Association, New England committee member, for organizing the event; and James Bones and Camelle Kent for their kind assistance and support.
