This year's service was led by Rev. Richard Lennan SJ, a priest of the diocese of Maitland-Newcastle in Australia and a Professor of Theology at Boston College.
Three young flagbearers, Alex Grant, Robert (“RJ”) Grant and Ariki Huata marked the beginning of the service leading into the singing of the national anthems. Ariki Huata is from Hawkes Bay in New Zealand. His grandfather was Wi Huata, chaplain of the renowned Maori Battalion during WWII.
Renowned Australian harpsichordist, Peter Watchorn, played the organ and had made many invaluable suggestions helping to plan the service and program.
Australian author and Visiting Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University,
Professor Nicholas Jose, read Laurence Binyon's Ode to the Fallen.
Scriptures were read by Simon Leeming, New Zealand Honorary Consul to New England; and Caroline Adler, an Australian incoming candidate to the Harvard Kennedy School, Class of 2012.
Captain Dale Stephens CSM RAN, a candidate for the Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.), Harvard Law School's most advanced law degree, provided the
keynote address.
Many new connections were formed and friends reacquainted, including the remarkable coincidence that Rev. Richard Lennan SJ and harpsichordist Peter Watchorn had attended primary school together back in Australia.
Refreshments were served at Dudley House, including Anzac biscuits, pies and sausage rolls. Many attendees brought plates to share.
The Association gives special thanks to Professor David Haig and the
Committee on Australian Studies at Harvard University and Damien Helem from the
Boston Demons for supporting this event.
