About Australia Day

Australia Day, 26 January, is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788.

Dr Elizabeth Kwan has written a concise history of Australia Day which you can download from here. (pdf 1mb)

Australia Day in Australia
Across Australia, Australia Day is celebrated in many different ways. From local community festivals, citizenship ceremonies, concerts or family barbeques. The Australian of the Year award is also presented on this day.
