J-1 EXCHANGE VISITOR PROGRAM

The American Australian Association is authorized by the United States Department of State and the United States Information Agency to issue to qualified business trainees the Certificate of Eligibility necessary to apply for an Exchange Visitor (J-1) Visa for up to 18 months.

The J-1 Visa Program provides Australian trainees with exposure to American business practices, corporate organization and substantive occupational experiences, as well as US social and cultural history. In turn, US employees gain valuable experience working with a person from a different cultural background and an understanding of the business culture of foreign companies with whom they may do business in the future.

J-1 SUMMMER WORK TRAVEL PROGRAM - WASHINGTON INTERNSHIP

The American Australian Association is a designated sponsor of the J-1 Summer Work Travel program.  Since 2005, the American Australian Association in partnership with The Fund for American Studies has sponsored more than 30 students for Congressional Internships.

The Association’s Summer Work Travel designation is specific in purpose and available to a limited number of Australian undergraduate tertiary students from the Australian National University, ACT and Flinders University, SA. Eligible students at both universities need to apply for admission and be selected by their respective universities to undertake ‘The Washington Internship’ - an accredited political course which incorporates a six week internship in a Congressional or Senate members office on Capitol Hill, Washington DC.

The names of successful candidates are provided to the American Australian Association by the course conveners, Dr. John Hart, Reader in Political Science, Australian National University and Professor Donald De Bats, Head of the American Studies Program at Flinders University.
